Hi, Everyone,
Have just discovered that my gt-gt-gt-grandfather was a "Sheriff's Officer" in London, possibly from the 1830's to the 1850's.
What kind of duties would a man in this position have had to perform...?
Very best wishes,
Keith

Dear Keith,
I think Sheriffs were only in the City of London working out of Guildhall. Contact the records office of the Corporation of London as they have lots of information about people who held positions there. Usually their records are next to Guildhall Library, but at the moment, due to refurbishment, they are based at the London Metropolitan Record Office.
Good luck

Hi, Corkcutter,
Thanks very much for that. Hadn't realised this job was so specific to London. Have been to The Guildhall Library several times before - a wonderful resource, especially for London Directories; had no idea they were having a re-organistation there. London Metropolitan Archives is practically opposite the Family Records Centre, so when things are a little calmer at King's Cross I'll take a train there, then stroll down to the LMA and have a browse through whatever they have...
Very best wishes,
Keith

Keith,
Glad to be of help and I hope my theory is correct! In case anyone else starts reading this thread, I just want to say that Guildhall Library is still functioning as normal, it's just the Corporation of London Record Office which has moved temporarily to the London Metropolitan.
If you don't get there in the near future, I'm intending to go mid-August to look at the CLRO records and could do a preliminary scan for you. It's a long way to come for what might be a red herring.

Cheryl,
Thanks for clarifying the situation for me. Very kind of you to offer to have a look for me, but red herrings are all part of the fun, aren't they? And I'm sure I shall be down in London, looking into this and other exciting things before July is out...!

Hi Keith
I think you will find that all Counties have Sherriffs and all Sherriffs have Officers.

Thanks very much for those comments Ronald and Annie,
I had a good read of Mickey M.'s thread, which was very interesting indeed.
Have put the visit to The Guildhall Library in London on hold for the while...
