My husbands GGG Grandfather Richard Withers lived to be over a hundred apparently born 1807 Burmington, Warwickshire, dieing 1909 Great rollright.
He appears to reside in Gt Rollright much of his life.
There does not appear to be a christening in Burmington so I am hoping there's some records in Gt Rollright.
The only records I do have are the census and Newspaper reports of his centenary, for some reason the family appear under the name Widows in 1841, but Withers 1851.
Richard his wife Eliza appear 1841
I have his daughter Mary Ann marriage cert, which says he is a Shepherd.
She was born abt 1843 Great Rollright.
Any marriages, christenings or burials from Gt Rollright for the Withers would be very much appreciated.
yours hopefully Brenda :)

I cannot see any death in Oxfordshire in 1909 for that profile
-
His death was registered 1910 - not 1909 although if he died late December 1909 - his death would probably only be registered in the March qtr of 1910
Incredible age for those days
Deaths March qtr 1910

Thanks Carole, I did have that, I should have said.
This is a real pain, the only way of obtaining, infomation for Great Rollright is The FHG and this one is particularly expensive, cost pence to produce.
Neither Genes Reunited, Ancestry or Find my past have those records.
Grrrrrrr :'(

Hi Brenda
The first thing may not know is The Oxfordshire Family History Society have transcribed most of the parish records to CD and they are available to buy from their web site. The society will also do a search for you for a small fee.
I have their CD for Great Rollright and it covers the following:
Bapts 1560 - 1887
Marrs 1560 - 1837
Burs 1560 - 1935
the records since then are with the incumbent at the church.
So to your search - give me a minute and I will be back hopefuly with some answers.

Nigel your an angel 8)

Some people have his parents as William & Mary as they lived and had children there at the right period.
But there is also a marriage of a John and Elizabeth Smith in Burmington in 1809, so possible parents too.
best regards Brenda
sitting fingers crossed ;D

And I can see the following burial entry
3 Feb 1910 Richard WIDDOWS of Great Rollright aged 104
(generally known as Richard WITHERS)
So that's that one Brenda, but there are lots of Widdows / Withers so who else and what for records do you want looked up?

Baptism for Maria Ann Widdows d o Richard and Eliza 15 May 1842 all of Great Rollright and Richard is entered as a labourer
-
oh wicked - what a picture.
I was in Great Rollright a couple of weeks ago, wish I knew where the photo was taken so to get a modern one to compare
-
I went there about 10 years ago to visit the stones, an archaeological tour. I'm an archaeologist :)
-
Now you have put the cat among the pigeons , I found in the 1841 census the family were under Widows, but come 1851 the name was Withers, so what to do . Thank you for that answer.
I guess any Widdows entry's too please
-
you realise one of the Withers married a Bull?
-
Maria Ann baptism you found is my Husbands gg grannie married as Withers.

Brenda
I am impressed archaeology is just fascinating. I should love to 'do' a dig - must be so exciting.
So to these records it seems quite odd that the family made use of 2 last names - not unusual but to be so clearly known for it as well.
Rather than provide info you may not need and time etc who are you particularly interested in or what line - I am happy to start and work back but from whom?
To just trawl through and type out a whole list, - and I type with my elbows or at least the number of mistakes I make it feels as though I should be!!! You may do better to get the CD in fact I suggest that may be best anyway as to unpick this family is going to be so complex?

the marriage of Richard & Eliza most importent I guess
-
Maria's marriage is not in the |PR's as they stop at at 1837 which is annoying as she married in 1867 didn't she
-
Your probably right abt buying the cd, but I'm dirt poor right now. My hubby has just come out of hospital after a hip replacement, he waited almost 8 years. from abt 51 to 57. All that time I have been his carer.
Mary Ann was the link to Richard, his parent and his marriage, parents marriage would be fantastic.
Your a gem, I can't thank you enough.
If you need any look ups in Sussex, I'm your's
Brenda :D
-
she married in Marylebone to William Rumens
-
An Ann married Thomas Bull 1854
-
Brenda
What about this marriage:
Richard WIDDOWS and Elizabeth PENN after banns at St Peters Church, Stretton upon Fosse on 13 Feb 1835 Wits: George Freeman & Ann Penn
The banns had been read on 4 Jan 1835, 11 Jan & 18 Jan
That looks so promising for his first marriage?
Sadly I cannot see his birth anywhere so it does indeed look as though that happened most likley in South Warwickshire.
I do see his second marriage to Jane which was registered in Chipping Norton but I do not have any details.

;D I had just added it
-
now you have me looking for widdows I am having better luck, still no baptism for Richard Tho :(
-
Sadly I cannot see his birth anywhere so it does indeed look as though that happened most likely in South Warwickshire.
I have been looking at their on line PR's and he is not there - another brick wall me thinks.
-
I see a post for Joseph b1812, parents John Widdows and Mary Hug.
Some where an illegitimate birth between Widdows and Withers maybe
-
the newspaper say he was born in Burmington
-
I live in Great Rollright and I am undertaking a local history blog, focusing on the life of Richard Widdows (aka Withers).
If you are a descendant of Withers, I am interested in hearing from you. Do you have any family stories about Withers?
I am particularly interested in the fantastic photo @brendaannc posted of Withers with the shepherd crook and dog. Percy Simms, a local photographer from Chipping Norton, took a number of photos of Withers that were featured in the local press (this photo looks as if it could also be by Percy Simms). The folk song collector Cecil Sharp also took photos of him when he wrote down a song from him.
@brendaanc I would like to seek permission to republish your photo on my blog. Please get in touch.
Many thanks
