Title: How did Randolph Knapp die in Bakewell?
Post by: joenix on Friday 27 March 15 13:02 GMT (UK)
I was hoping someone would know where to find the death information (or any other info about his work, and reasons why he moved to Derbyshire) regarding a relative of mine, Randolph Knapp born 1875 in Northamptonshire. Sometime between 1891 & 1897 he moved to Derbyshire and married Georgina Johnson in 1897 in Darley. They had 8 children, but he died age 34 in Bakewell.
Any information at all will be of interest.
Thank you for your time,
Sarah Knapp

Getting a copy of the Death Cert should answer your question ...

His wife was from Derbyshire so that probably explains why he moved there  :)

In 1901 he was a railway porter.  In 1891 a general labourer.  Died 27 October 1909.

Hi,

Suggest it was because sometime between 1891 - 1893 he became a worker for Midland Railway.

1893 as R. Knapp he is in Harpenden.

After that he is listed as being at Matlock or Matlock Bridge.

You can access these records on Ancestry, All UK, Railway Employment Records, 1833-1956.

If you do not have access to Ancestry, check with your Library as many offer free access.

Hi,

Randolph Knapp did not die in Bakewell, his death is recorded in Civil Registration
December Quarter 1909 Bakewell 7b 460, however Bakewell is the Civil Registration District,
which includes Matlock.

Again on Ancestry - National Probate Register states:-

Randolph Knapp of the Dimple, Matlock, Derbyshire. Railway Porter died 27th October 1909
Administration 17th December, Derby to Georgina Knapp widow. Effects £239. 5s 3d.

Administration means he left no Will.

I think that Spendlove's excellent research and provision of what seems to be a complete answer to the original question, deserves at least an acknowledgement, and probably some degree of gratitude..sadly often lacking on these boards.

Derbysderek,

Although I agree with your sentiments, the OP has not been on this website since the day that they posted, so perhaps when they return they will have ample opportunity to offer thanks.

It has been a very long time since I posted this message. Unfortunately my Rootschat mails ended up in the spam-box.

Thank you VERY much for your help. The information you have been able to find for me is of real interest, and thanks to sites like this those of use who live too far away can still work on the family tree.

Thank you again, and sorry for the late reply,

Sarah Knapp

I believe this was my grandfather. Somewhere, I have a photograph of him in his Midland Railway uniform standing outside the Station Master's house at Matlock Station.
If you would like to send me your email address, I'll look for it, scan it and send the file to you.
My mother was Dorothy Sarah Georgina Knapp. She may have been his youngest daughter. I believe that the eldest was May or Mavis K. I always knew her as auntie May. My mother had a brother Randolph Knapp, obviously named after his father about whom you inquired.
I always meant to look into our family history and would be pleased to let you know all I know.

ChrisJacq - Randolph and Georgina appear to have had 8 children, the first 3 of whom died young:

Doris birth registered June quarter 1898, d.1904
Randolph birth registered June quarter 1899, d.1899
Beatrice birth registered June quarter 1901, d.1902
Gladys birth registered Mar. quarter 1903
Florence May birth registered June quarter 1904
Wilmot Francis E. birth registered Sept.quarter 1905
Thomas Randolph birth registered June quarter 1907
Sarah Dorothy G. birth registered Sept. quarter 1909

I see your mother switched her 2 first names around by the time she married in 1945 but birth registered as above and also Sarah D.G. on census.

Welcome to rootschat, ChrisJacq

As joenix has not used rootschat since mid-2015, she may need a more direct way to contact her.

I think you need to have posted three times before you can use the email system, so just do 2 more posts on here, and then you can try to contact her and hope to avoid her spam inbox.

I was quite young when I regularly met uncle Randolph. He and auntie Doris (not certain of her maiden name,) lived in Matlock Bath. My mother, Dorothy, adored her brothers. She often spoke of Wilmott who must have died in the 50s or earlier and we regularly visited Randolph.

However, I have little knowledge of their father, Randolph, about whom the subject of this thread was started, other than that which you already have save for my mother stating that he was a tall kindly man who worked hard to keep his family but died of a heart condition manifested by moving railway track sleepers too often - which seems incongruous with his job as porter. It may be that his duties were more general on the line through Matlock, Darley Dale, Rowsley and Bakewell, but I always thought it strange. Whether there was another reason, I do not know. Nevertheless, my mother remembered them with a sincere fondness.

As to Gladys, who lived with auntie May's daughter and children, these lived nearby and we often visited each other, the daughters, Jane and Judith being of similar age to myself, too.

Perhaps you would let me know you own interest in the family and I can communicate more freely on another occasion, for I also knew auntie May (as I knew her) and, of course, my mother.
