Title: Hitchcox Family Difficulties! Help Needed.
Post by: DavidJP on Wednesday 25 March 15 20:44 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

My 3xt gr aunt Mary Hollis/Holliss (1823-1858) married John Hitchcox (1823-1897) in 1844 I believe in Claverdon. They then had 6 children all born & baptised in Lillington as follows:

Joseph Hitchcox (1845-1846)
William Henry Hitchcox (1847-?)
Charles Hitchcox (1849-?)
Rebecca Jane Hitchcox (1851-1852)
George Hitchcox (1853-?) Marries Ellen Piper in Birmingham in 1879.
James Frederick Hitchcox (1855-?)
Mary Ann Hitchcox (1858-?) Is Marianne on familysearch baptism record. Possibly married Charles Ludwick as Mary Ann Hitchcock in Leamington in December 1876.

Mary Hitchcox (Nee' Hollis) dies in 1858 & John Hitchcox remarries in 1861 to Ann Devis & they have one child:

Alice Devis Hitchcox (1862-?) Marries Edwin Frederick H Taylor in 1885.

Here is where the difficulties begin, either William Henry Hitchcox's birth registration is missing or he was registered as Joseph Henry Hitchcox, but baptised & appears in censuses as William Henry! Also I have been unable to find Alice Devis Hitchcox's birth index record.

I am needing the 1851 census for the family if someone could look that up for me I would be grateful, they should be in Lillington. Mary born Claverdon & John born Lillington.

Mary dies in 1858 & is registered in the December qtr of 1858, however familysearch has a burial record for her of 21st Nov 1859 in Lillington and age 36.

John's second marriage to Ann Devis appears to happen on two different dates & in two different places according to familysearch! Firstly on the 29th September 1861 at Leamington & then 2 & a half weeks later on 17th Oct 1861 in Lillington! Which is the correct date or are either of them right?

Sons Charles & James Frederick Hitchcox disappear after the 1861 & 1871 censuses respectively! No marriages or deaths for that matter can be found for them.

Lastly Mary Ann Hitchcox (b1858) possibly marries Charles Ludwick in Leamington in 1879 (a familysearch marriage record)as Mary Ann Hitchcock, I am completely unable to find the marriage in the marriage index. Neither can I find them  in subsequent censuses!

My apologies for the size of this request, but this family seem to be defying all my efforts at locating them or any respective records. Also due to the large number of problems as noted above.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Here is where the difficulties begin, either William Henry Hitchcox's birth registration is missing or he was registered as Joseph Henry Hitchcox, but baptised & appears in censuses as William Henry!

Buying the birth certificate for the names of the parents of Joseph Henry will show if that is correct.

Mary Hitchcox was buried 21st Nov 1859 in Lillington, she was 36 years old.

John Hitchcox and Ann Devis were married at Lillington Parish Church on October 17th 1861, witnesses Edward and Emma Hitchcox. The other date relates to the final Banns being published at Leamington Priors and Lillington Parish Churches. John was of the Parish of Lillington and Ann was of Leamington Priors.

Hi sgf28, chempat & Warkz,

Many thanks indeed for your replies, very much appreciated indeed.

sgf28, many thanks for the 1851 census detail, very much appreciated.

chempat, thanks for that, another cert to add to the ever growing pile of those that I need to get! ;D

WarkZ, many thanks for burial & marriage info, much appreciated. I still can't work out why her death was registered in Dec qtr 1858 (a year before her burial) though, no other deaths in the index for a Mary Hitchcox at that time. Most odd.

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

The 1876 entry involving Charles Ludwick is banns not a marriage (on Ancestry anyway)

Hi Claire, chempat, Keyboard86 & Mabel Bagshawe,

Many thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

Claire, many thanks for the birth index record, much appreciated. Had come across the possible alternative in Hitchcock for one of the possible marriages, but hadn't thought to check that surname for births!  ;D Thanks.

chempat, ooops, my my mistake, I meant 1876 not 1879,  too many dates to type up, that's what it was! ;D Date now corrected on original post.

Keyboard86, thanks for the baptism, much appreciated.

Mabel Bagshawe, just caught your post, thanks for that!

Kind regards

David

Hi,

After a little more research, I have found the following:

William Henry Hitchcox may have married as plain William Hitchcox to Mary Ann Bloxham on 12th Feb 1867 in Radford Semele (familysearch marriage record.) The marriage appears on freeBMD as Hatchcox/Hutchcox, William to Bloxam/Bloxham, Mary Ann. No wonder things are so hard to find sometimes! ::)

Also, on familysearch census search for 1861 I find Emma Hitchcox (complete with birthplace as Southampton Claverdon! ::)) in Leamington Priors as an Apprentice/Student. Could someone look up this one for me please & let me have the full details?

I seem to lose Emma after 1861. I have already ruled out two marriage possibles as being the wrong Emma Hitchcox's. I seem to be losing rather to many Hitchcox's for my liking! ;D Think that's three at the last count or maybe 4 if the William marriage turns out to be wrong! ::)

Many thanks in advance & also for all help/assistance received so far.

Kind regards

David

Dear Researcher of the Hitchcox Family.  There are many many versions of this name.  Sorry I cannot help you with your direct problem, as our Hitchcox family section was much earlier than you want.  If you feel this would help you, I can get the information from my family tree, and set it out here for you.
Best wishes for your success.   Histiorn.

William Hitchcox Single Father Richd Hitchcox
Mary Ann Bloxham Single Father Saml Bloxham

So father incorrect for William?

Hi Histiorn & Keyboard86,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

Histiorn, A very warm welcome to Rootschat! Many thanks for the kind offer of info regarding earlier Hitchcox's, much appreciated. At this point in time its not needed but if ever it is I will let you know. My thanks to you again.

Keyboard86, many thanks for the marriage info re William Hitchcox, much appreciated. As you suggested the father being Richard Hitchcox instead of John Hitchcox makes it the wrong marriage! That's now 4 Hitchcox's that I have now lost track of (as noted in my reply no10), what happened to them!

Emma Holliss/Hitchcox (1843-?) Last seen in Leamington Priors as an apprentice in 1861.
William Henry Hitchcox (1847-?) Last seen at home in Lillington in 1861.
Charles Hitchcox (1849-?) Last seen at home Lillington in 1861.
James Frederick Hitchcox (1855-?) last seen at home in Lillington in 1871.

The above are the four that I have now lost and can find no trace of whatsoever! I wonder where on earth they went & what happened to them?

Kind regards

David

Hi Keyboard86,

Many thanks for that, much appreciated. That is rather sad as you say.

Eventually found the death index record for Emma, after some searching! Registered under Hitchcock! ::)

Interestingly/oddly enough in the same quarter (Dec 1862) is registered the death of an Edward Hitchcock. Both Emma & Edward (who I believe to be John's brother) were witnesses at John's second marriage to Ann Devis the previous year (1861). I wonder what if anything happened there?

As usual with family history, more questions than answers! ;D

Kind regards

David
