Hi,
I wonder if someone would be kind enough to have a look at a marriage for me? The marriage in question is between Joshua Drake and Mary White Doncaster 2 February 1801. I would like to know the status of the bride and groom and who the witnesses were. Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi
Banns of marriage between Joshua Drake and Mary White were published Jan 11,18,25 at St George's Church Doncaster and they were married 2 February 1801.

Sorry, must have caught the wrong key.
No status is given, they both made their marks and the only witness was Willam ?Barrow.

Thank you for your response. I was hoping that Joshua and possibly Mary would be shown as a widower/Widow and that the witnesses may be family members. You can't win them all!

I can confirm Peramas remarks and, after looking at the damaged original, can tell you that the officiating curate was William Moore, the banns were read on January 11th 1801 and that there is no mention of their status. The assumption is,therefore, that they were spinster and batchelor.

Thank you for your comments. The assumption on the status of the bride and groom makes sense, but its not what I wanted hear!

Thank you all for your responses. You are all correct. My direct ancestor Joshua Drake married Ann Dixon 24 November 1791. They had three known children - Benjamin born 1793 died 1798, Hannah born 1794 died 1860(my direct ancestor) and Christopher born 1797and died 1798. Ann died in 1798, so I am assuming that the disease that killed two of her children also killed her. However, Joshua was left a widower with a young daughter. Therefore, it would be resonable for him to look for a new wife to care for his daughter.
The marriage in 1801 fits. I know that because something fits does not make it correct but..... I have looked for a Joshua Drake born in the correct time frame and failed to find one. My Joshua was born in 1766(father Joshua) and died I think in 1825. I have discounted the Hartshead births, these, I think, are a different family.
If any one is able to find another Joshua Drake whose marriage it could be I would be interested to hear. I should add that Joshua Senior(the father of Joshua) only had two sons, the youngest of which Benjamin born 1769 did have a son named Joshua but he wasnt born until 1825.
Many thanks,
Sandra

Does the following burial at St George's Doncaster help?
5 May 1798 Ann Drake aged 36 wife of Joshua a labourer. Cause of death -decline.

Hi Peramar,
Thank you for your reply. In answer to your question it helps in the sense that it further confirms that Ann, the wife of Joshua died, in 1798. It doesnt unfortunatley answer the question regarding whether Joshua remarried or who to!
