Title: William Waudby and Pollie Barlow 1937 - 4 Wellhouse Sq Leeds / 1 Blenheim Cottag
Post by: Stacie87 on Sunday 15 March 15 16:40 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

Im starting the search again after a few years off...

My Gran was Alice Waudby Barlow born 1920 at 1 Blenheim Cottages Monkgate York. Her mother as per her birth cert is Pollie Barlow (it says "Formerly Rhodes domestic housekeeper" im assuming Rhodes was the surname of the family she worked for as opposed to her maiden name) Since there is no father listed i have taken her mothers maiden name to be Barlow. The fathers name on her marriage cert is William Barlow (although the barlow is a red herring!)

During a search (with help from a fellow roots chat memeber!) a few years back on the 1911 census a William WAUDBY and his family are living at blenheim cottages (So now i assume my grans middle name is actually her fathers surname) he was married and had a family but it looks like they split and his wife in 1911 died in 1923 (Grace Waudby nee Liddell)

Since then on the leeds 1937 electoral roll i have found a William Waudby and Pollie Barlow living at 4 Wellhouse square, Leeds (which is the address my gran has stated on her marriage cert) so i finally feel like im getting somewhere...

But have hit a complete brick wall with Pollie! Is there anyway i can get hold of records of the 2 addresses from 1911 - 1937? i would like to see in which year pollie appears or is there anyway i can trace her job description?

Living in Bath i have found not knowing the leeds area at all a bit of a hindrance as even if i find a pollie barlow birth im not even able to take a guess at the area  :( but im hoping the 2 addresses are the key to this search without any census's.

Thanks in advance

Could Pollie have been married before
Marriage Sep qtr 1911
Barlow    Ernest
Rhodes    Pollie
North Bierley    9b   129

normally when it says 'Formerly Rhodes'  it would mean that was her maiden name

Hi Rosie

Thanks for helping out  ;D

It is possible, i had come across them but with no other info im not sure how to know if that Pollie is definitely the Pollie im after? The only thing i know for certain about Pollie is she was living in Wellhouse at 1937

Would it have been common back then if Pollie had left Ernest and had a child with William Waudby to give her Barlow as a surname?

Also is North Bierley far from the areas i have?

Thanks again :)

North Bierley RD covers these areas
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/north%20bierley.html

I always use online maps when trying to decide whether the areas are a possibility.  Like you I am 'down South'

It would not be impossible for her to have left Ernest or for Ernest to have died

Thanks Rosie,

Ill order the marriage cert and see if that can help me tie together, luckily their dont seem to be many Pollie Rhodes or Barlows around Leeds so its worth a go i think :)

Unless Pollie had re married when your grandmother was born, the child would take her motherīs surname, which in this case would still be Barlow.

There was another couple mentioned on the marriage reference so make sure that you quote both names when ordering the certificate.  There is a male child born 1912 N Bierley RD  that could be a child of that marriage
