Hello,
Matthew (James) HUNTER arrived in Geelong aboard the Joseph Somes on 24/09/1847 as an "Exile". He was initially employed by W.Piper, Mount Macedon as a General Servant. His parents were James and Mary Jane (nee Roscrow) and he had been baptised on 16/05/1833. He also had a sister, Mary Jane, born 10/09/1836.
It is understood he married 19 year old Ann TRAILL in Victoria in 1854 and they had 9 children, 4 of whom died prematurely. Her parents were David and Ann (nee McLean) Ann HUNTER died in 1908 in Hotham West and Matthew (James) HUNTER himself in 1910 East Melbourne. Could someone please confirm, if possible, the marriage/family details, adding any other information that may be pertinent, such as occupation etc.
Thank you for your help.

Marriage:
Matthew HUNTER m. Ann TRAIL 1854 #1829
As the eleven registered births all appear in the gold fields it's highly likely they were married in the Ballarat/Clunes area.

Tony, have you contacted this lady to see if she has any certificates or documents to verify her research?

Good Evening Merlin,
Thank you for all the research. I am extremely grateful, especially as you fairly well confirm all the details I had already uncovered.
However, your link has "thrown a spanner in the works" and although I cannot find any reference to Mathew HUNTER, born Birkenhead 1826, in the appropriate census returns, the fact that one of the children is named "Collinson", and his father is "Collison", turns the spanner a little. I have not contacted the lady concerned yet, but will do so shortly with a little apprehension that her research is correct!!!!
Once again , thank you. I will keep you up-to-date with the results.
For the moment,
Tony

Hello MERLIN,
Guess what? My email flashed back marked UNDELIVERABLE.
However, I have researched again the details in that link and can find no Collison HUNTER, the father of Mathew HUNTER born 1826 in Birkenhead, in Ancestry, LDS, FreeCEN, and neither is there reference to the son anyway!! There is another inconsistency in the link you found, too, namely, Ann TRAILL's parents were David and Ann NOT David and Ellen as in the link. I have serious doubts about that User Tree.
I wonder if anyone has access to the Digger Pioneer CD's (mine gave up the ghost a little while ago), which may prove his age and, hope against hope, even his parents!!
Thank you once again for all your efforts.
For the moment,
Tony

The information that I have given you is from the above CD's.

Do you have the marriage certificate for Matthew and Ann; if so what information is given re James' birhtplace and parents?
FamilySearch does have a Collison HUNTER b Sunderland 1789
His wife is listed as Elizabeth Theaker/Thaker/Peacock'
He was buried in Sunderland 12 September 1861
The children listed were all listed as born Sunderland, Durham
Robert HUNTER, b 8 June 1815
Michael HUNTER, b 27 June 1821
Elizabeth HUNTER, b 10 October 1830 (mother's name Elizabeth Peacock - same mother or poor transcription?) m Robert WOOD 1828 (father's name at marriage "Collinson")
Thomas HUNTER, b 7 April 1826
Collinson HUNTER, b 1819
There is also a mention of a Colinson HUNTER b 1817 joined the merchant navy.
FamilySearch has this entry for 1861 census, and refers to FindMyPast - I cannot see it on the other commercial site though.
Collison HUNTER
Sub-District: 1 North Bishop-Wearmouth
Parish: Bishopwearmouth
Ecclesiastical Parish: St Thomas
Registration District: Sunderland
Age: 72
Gender: Male
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
Birthplace: Sunderland, Durham
It is on FreeCen as well giving his occupation as "former keelman"
His wife is Elizabeth 69 also b Sunderland.
Could he have been an uncle? The fact that James named one of his children Collison seems to point to some kind of relationship as it is not a common forename.

Not sure about my idea of him being an uncle as I cannot find a sibling called James for this Colli(n)son HUNTER. (You gave Matthew's father's name as James.)
There are 11 children listed on FamilySearch with parents Michael HUNTER and Elizabeth between 1780 and 1795, but no James. The mother's surname is listed as "Collison" for one of the records so that would be where the name came from.

Tony, I am in no way convinced that Matthew/Mark HUNTER who married Ann TRAILL is the one you are looking for ???
I can see marriages & deaths of their children both in VIC & TAS that show Matthew/Mark & Ann's grandchildren carrying the COLLISON name :-\

Deaths:
Matw HUNTER 78yrs d. 1910 MELB E H #2614
Father: Unknown
Mother: Unknown UNKNOWN
This death could possibly be your Matthew HUNTER as he doesn't appear to be the Matthew/Mark HUNTER that has been detailed on the thread.
But as you can see there are no parents names noted on the death certificate & he died in hospital.

Hello Merlin and judb,
It seems that you have effectively rejected my original understanding about Matthew HUNTER and I can only say thank you for all your efforts. I must admit to having had my reservations about the source I discovered in that no place of birth or parents were identified and, of course, no certificates were mentioned as evidence, only references to the Australia Death/Marriage Indexes, which I do not have access to. Hence, my question to RootsChat.......if, for instance, I had had sight of such things as a Marriage Certificate for Matthew/Ann possibly such a question would have been unnecessary.
The one thing I have noticed is that no mention has been made about him being born in Birkenhead!! That from the other website you uncovered!!
Another pending tray candidate, sadly, although at least we know the facts I quoted were correct but not for the correct person. Such are the brick walls that genealogy throw up that invariably I crash into with the "Exiles"......so much easier with Tasmania where the convict documentation in most cases has the advantage of the parents, sisters and brothers being recorded.
My thanks and gratitude for all your hard work.

Matthew (James) HUNTER arrived in Geelong aboard the Joseph Somes on 24/09/1847 as an "Exile".
Another possible death for your Matthew:
Matthew James HUNTER 87yrs d. 1919 MELB E #13662
Father: Unknown
Mother: Unknown UNKNOWN
Again not much help as parents are unknown :(

Hi Tony
So which person are you trying to trace back from?
Perhaps we can help with that?
Judith

Judith,
I am trying to create a biography for Matthew (James) HUNTER ex-Joseph Somes.
I uncovered a Family Tree that could have fitted the profile and asked RootsChat to confirm or reject that it was the correct person.......you have adopted the latter, which I am quite happy to accept.
For now,
Tony

Hello Merlin,
You may have retrieved the correct person, died 1919 aged 87, which gives his date of birth 1832.
What happened to him during the intervening 72 years from 1847 Geelong I wonder ??? :'(
For now,
Tony

Hi I know its sometime since the original post but keen to find out what happened to Matthew James Hunter when he arrived in Australia. He was a cousin of my great grandfather George Roscrow - His dad died at sea. His mum was Mary (nee Roscrow) and when he started offending she tried to get him into the navy school at Greenwich, unfortunately not successfully. My interest has been reawakenend by my own son who has recently travelled to Melbourne. Being able to track his flight and speak to him regularly has helped me adjust to this - and I wonder if Matthew's family ever saw him again. Joseph Pines and Joseph Rhymes were his accomplices in the what seems like the very petty crimes he was prosecuted for and they travelled wth him to Geelong
Would be grateful for any information and happy to share anything about his family in England
Thanks
Suzanne Pringle (nee Roscrow)

Hello Suzanne,
I hope this message reaches you.
Did I ever reply to your post of 17/05/2023 about Matthew (James) HUNTER? The possibility is that your post was never directed to me!!
For the moment,
