up until now I have stored my tree on ancestry although kept it private, on the 10 april my hubby will be made redundant at work, and clearly that is going to be at the bottom of the list of priorities for a while, however I don't want to loose all my work and info that I have gained over the last few years, so what do I do now? where and how can I store it all free of charge or preferably on my laptop? how do I move it all over?
I wish I had kept a paper copy of all this info, and now its become a much bigger task then I ever dreamt of doing
-
Depending on he size of your tree you are probably looking at a great deal of work but I suggest you transfer the information to www.familysearch.org which will host it free of charge.
-
my tree is very large due to me being an adopted child, basically I have 2 sets of trees! and I would rather not use family search thanks
-
Do you know anyone you really trust, who is maintaining their ancestry sub, who would be willing to "adopt" - i.e., incorporate or import your entire tree into theirs? If that's possible, and you can do it, you could "reclaim" it at some future date, I feel sure?
Is there a printer-friendly way you could chop it up into sections and then print them out to re-assemble?
Otherwise, perhaps it's time before it expires to get a very large piece of paper for each tree and start copying it out by hand.
-
I also have a private tree on Ancestry. I have not had a subscription for a couple of months now. Nothing happens when you do not renew your subscription. Your tree is still there and you can still see it.
You can still see any photos or documents that you have added to your tree. And you can still add a new photo. You cannot add anything new that you now trace on Ancestry.
If you have been 'invited' to see anyone else's tree, you will still be able to see that.
You can reply to personal messages sent to you, but you cannot write new personal messages.
Your tree will stay exactly as it is, indefinitely. If it's private now, it will stay private.
Don't worry, there's no problem
-
is there a facility to download the Tree in Gedcom format?
That way you will have a backup on your own PC - and also the ability to upload elsewhere if you so chose .... minus graphics or Ancestry-specific features ....
-
although you are not a member of ancestry anymore you can still keep it there if you wished.
http://ancestryuk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5035/kw/my%20tree%20if%20no%20longer%20a%20member
you can also download it as a gedcom to your computer - which is recommended even if you put it elsewhere. you can upload it then to other family history sites eg
http://www.tribalpages.com/tribe/member
-
thanks all for al of that info, firstly im not sure what a gedcom really is, I don't know anyone that I could transfer the tree to, and I don't own a printer
and you say that my tree would stay on ancestry indefinitely? well how can I look at it and do work on it manually if im no longer a member? surely I will just get a screen telling me I need to log in?

You just log in as normal, same username and password.

If you go on a certain auction site you could purchase a "Family Tree Maker" CD second hand for as little as 99 pence.
This you can load onto your home computer and then download the tree from Ancestry straight to it. Then you can work on it to your hearts content at home when you want. I can never understand why anyone wants to work on their tree online anyway, but that is of course just my personal preference. ;)
Gedcom explanation...

Sorry Lostris you beat me to it!
-
sorry Lostris, I read it, but well im lost at the 4th line lol the rest meant nothing at all to me, so how do I use that to get the info on my lappy then?
-
I cant find any cd's for 99p on there they are all at least £20
-
I know of a 'tree' on Ancestry that has been there for a very very long time. It is a public tree - and the owner is deceased. Nothing has been added to it for years now...
and cos its public anyone can access it and see what it says.

There is one on Ebay for 99 pence, if you put Family Tree Maker in the search box it is the 26th in the list- for some reason it will not let me copy the page for the link.

"NEW Family Tree Maker Deluxe sealed
£0.99
0 bids
+ £2.80 postage"
Even with the postage it still works out cheaper than a months membership , there are lots on there for the same price all with no bids, so shouldn't be a problem to pick one up.
Have you thought of asking for a copy for your birthday ? A new one often comes with a membership deal. ;D
I think Xinia she still wants to be able to work on it
-
and it has 5 days to go! just like my hubby im always having to remind him of that one! yeah starts at a low price but then goes up just like the rest of them to over £20
-
my birthday isn't until july! I wont be on ancestry then at all
-
no I don't need to be able to work on it in the same way that I do currently, I don't mind reverting back to using books and such like, I just need something to store it on so I don't loose all the info I currently have
-
There is a 2011 deluxe version on Amazon for £7.99--- free postage too.
-
can you give me the links to them please?
-
If all else fails could you do screen captures of the tree section by section.
I've never seen an Ancestry tree so maybe a daft idea.
You would than have all the info to rebuild on your PC using a family tree program or, as I have, using Excell.

4th down in the list

I don't have a clue how to do screen shots lol, and you are way to clever if you know how to use excel

ok found it now thanks but its not free p and p and the box has been opened so unsure if that's going to be ok or not, and has it been used? who knows?
-

If you don't need to work on it or add to it, don't worry, even if you don't have a sub it will stay on Ancestry for you to see. Then, if at a later date you can afford a new sub, you can just pick it up where you left off.
-
I am out of here now ::)

Screen shots are very easy, and I don't use excel as such, I just insert lots of boxs I can write in. I only do it in excel because it gives you lots of space.
Have to go out now but I'll show you later what I mean.

hello dawn

Family Tree Maker is great, it will link directly to ancestry.co.uk. You can download everything and when times get better it will update again. If you look on amazon for about £30 you get the software and 6 months free ancestry. I got one for Christmas.
hope things go well for you.
-
I agree about FTM - a great bargain as not only do you get the programme to use on your computer, you also get the 6 months free Ancestry, so it works out far cheaper than buying a subscription. In fact I know some people who just buy a new FTM every few months!
-
If you still want to research online you can always log on at the local library for free.
-
our local library has no access to computors in there nearest would be 8 miles away
-
See I just use the shapes to make boxes I can put names and dates into.
You can insert photos and use the line option from shapes to draw lines.
Turn off the grid and you get a plain white background.
Takes a little pratice but it's fun and no limit on size.
-
I think the nearest I have on my laptop is to use paint to get that effect
-
My apologies for this - but why have you relied solely on Ancestry to record your family history? :-\ The majority of us have our records stored in other (even various) areas so that we are covered for all (well almost) circumstances.
-
because other than writing things out with pen and paper I didn't know of any other way to go about it!
-

You can also use Office.org version which is free.
-
haven't got that office on here, just tried and cant for some reason
-
dawnkaren - there are a few family history programs that you can download for free. One of them is Legacy. I've got the de-luxe version that I paid for, but my husband has the basic free one. Unless you are computer savvy and want to do lots of clever things with your tree, the free one is ideal. You can copy your ancestry tree to gedcom and then add it to Legacy. You can work on it as much as you like and it won't cost you anything.
Lizzie
-
that sounds great, do you have a link that I can use to take a look please?
-
Here's the link
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
I started off on the free download and when i could afford it i got the upgrade.
Hope it works for you
Carol
-
Good luck dawnkaren - lots of Rootschatters use Legacy so if you have any problems with it just ask.
Lizzie
-
I cannot see the problem, even if you are not a paid member of ancestry you can access your tree, you can alter it, add to it or take from it. You can even start a new tree, all without being a paid member, You cannot access ancestry's records is all.

Quite so :D
-
But it's always better to have a private tree on your own PC or laptop (backed up regularly of course).
Lizzie
-
because other than writing things out with pen and paper ....
Best way - imho!
Then there is never any issue with the technology changing, the subscription needing renewing, the PC going wrong, leaving it for years and coming back to find the media it was stored in is then obsolete, etc etc.
-
I have trees on Ancestry never belonged, just add anything I know is correct, or delete.
