Hi, wonder if anyone can help. According to the census records for 1871 and 1881 my Great Grandparents lived in a cottage on the estate of Little Syon (or Sion?) House in Isleworth. Although I can find out a lot about Syon House there appears to be nothing about Little Syon...were they different places? Be grateful for any information.
Thanks
Gaynor

Hi, yes I saw this too but as my Great Grandparents were living there in 1881 I guess it must be a different house? Unless the house was demolished in 1818 but whoever owned the land still farmed it but lived somewhere else? This is what confused me!!

Does this help ?
http://www.brentfordtw8.com/default.asp?section=community&link=http://appasp.brentfordtw8.com/server/app/forum/ShowMessage.asp?ID=849936
which refers onto the Museum of London web site
there's quite a few references to Little Syon House in e.g. Gentleman Magazine, The Monthly Magazine etc on Google Books but as you say before the date.
Where else have you searched ? So we don't duplicate your work.
Have you contacted Hounslow local Studies, or the West Middlesex Family History Society for example?

As yet I haven't done any more than to try and Google it, but thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a go!

Who were your grandparents. Perhaps the information we can see on the census can lead us to help you further.

Hi Rosie, my Great Grandparents were Richard and Julia Simmonds who appear on the census for 1871 and 1881 at Little Syon . I'm just curious as to where this was as all evidence suggests this house was demolished in 1818! Any help will be great, thank you

The 1871 census enumerator district says 'from the North entrance Lodge to Syon Park with one cottage in Little Syon within the above park.
On the next page the properties are listed as
High Road Duke of Northumberland Lodge - Cottage in Little Sion - Toll House - Angel Inn.
So it looks as though it was within the grounds of Syon Park :) I would have thought it should show on maps of the time

Thanks Rosie, so it seems that he did work for the owners of Syon Park which is what I remember hearing as a child. Evidently the family got kicked out when Richard died as the children, my Grandfather included, ended up scattered around the country in various educational establishments (better than the Workhouse I suppose!). That's the way it was then I guess. I will have a look at some maps....thanks again
