Freereg has the birth of a Robert Dickison, Dec qtr 1837, Castle Ward, vol 25, p.169.
Coxlodge, where he appears to have been born, living there in 1841, was in Castle Ward District.

May I ask Helen how you know Margaret was nee Barras?

Possible Birth Reg;
Robert DICKINSON, June 1838, Hexham, 25 250
If they were living in Coxlodge when Robert was born, then the birth would not be registered in Hexham RD, but in Castle Ward.

Thank you all very much for all your helpful suggestions.
I managed to find the marriage of john turnbull to margaret barrass after following a very sideways route.
the marriage of joseph dickinson to elizabeth greener sounds possible. i will look into that, and also the birth of robert dickinson at castle ward. i dont think the one at hexham is the right one but i will investigate.

dear wolfie smith and jen b ( and all the others who posted ideas )
what can I say. YOU ARE BRILLIANT ! the suggestions you posted have broken down a brick wall in minutes that has taken me years !
I sent for the birth certificate of Robert Dickison from Castle Ward district. It came this morning and it is the right one ! ( all that trying just for a spelling mistake in his surname ).
Now I am searching for the marriage of Joseph Dickinson and Elizabeth ARMSTRONG c 1824.
Thank you

Given that info then. Living next door to the Dickinsons in 1841 census in Coxlodge is Joseph Armstrong, 40, Shoemaker & Grocer, wife Mary 40, and family. In 1851 Mary Armstrong is now a widow, still living next door to the Dickinsons.
The will of Joseph Armstrong is on the Durham Wills Site. Joseph Armstrong, Shoemaker of Coxlodge, died 2 June 1845. Mentions his properties in Corbridge, leaves everything to his widow Mary. One of the witnesses to the will is .... Joseph Dickinson.
Suggests that Joseph Armstrong is Elizabeths brother.
Burial at Gosforth, 5 June 1845, Joseph Armstrong, of Fawdon, age 49.
Baptisms at Corbridge.
Baptized 3 Jul 1796, Joseph, son of John and Elizabeth Armstrong of Corbridge.
Born 13 Jul 1799, baptized 1 Sep 1799, Elizabeth, 3rd dau of John Armstrong, Shoemaker, Native of Corbridge, by his wife Elizabeth Walton, Native of St John Lee.
Needs more work but seems to fit. Still can't find the marriage though.
Alan.

Dear Wolfie
Thank you again. Seems pretty conclusive. Wonder where ( If ? ) they married. More work to do, as you say, but a pretty good start !
