Title: Raheen(s) Borris
Post by: Phenmark on Thursday 12 March 15 12:21 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I hope to get some help with a question I have regarding the entry of "Raheen" as an address on 5 baptism records from 1835-1849. The records are from rootsireland. The children are those of Thomas MacDonald and Sally (Neil). The parish/district is listed as Borris.

My question is, does anyone know if the townlands of Raheendarragh and/or Raheenkyle in Borris parish were referred to as just "Raheen?"  I realize there is a townland of Raheen in Leighlinbridge parish.

I am fairly certain that the family lived and worked in Raheenkile and Raheendarragh, Kiltennell, Borris, per Tithe Appointment Books and Griffith's. Their marriage record gives no address, but lists the parish as, Borris. Yet, I've never seen an entry of "Raheendarragh" or "Raheenkile,"just "Raheen."

Thanks!
Steve

Yes, raheen is still locally used for both these adjoining townlands. McDonalds would have lived there.  (No relation to me!)

Thank you, Maryod!
We are planning a trip to the area in September, and I am looking forward to visiting these townlands (also Rathanna).
Thanks again!
Steve

Thanks Conahy,
We just returned from Carlow. Beautiful, beautiful country. The trip was truly beyond anything I could have imagined. It turns out that my grandfather's 2nd cousin still has ties to Raheendarragh. She had heard that 2 of her grandfathers' brothers left for America in the 1860's (one being my gg grandfather).
As a matter of fact, the original farmhouse still stands, and is still being used. It is pretty much as it was built in 1850. What's more, I was invited to the house and shown all around! Definitely the high point of all my 8 years of research.

It always helps to have your "Homework" (Research) done beforehand.
