Title: Looking help searching for Eugenia Johnson born in Sweden Circa 1881
Post by: philos on Friday 06 March 15 15:50 GMT (UK)

I'm looking for someone but unfortunately someone with a terribly generic name, Eugenia Johnson, apparently my maternal grandfather's mother. She was born in Sweden supposedly in 1881, according to the U.S. Census in 1920, taken in Minneapolis city, Hennepin county, Minnesota.

Please tell me where would be the best place to ask for help finding further information about her and her son/nephew/ who was my grandfather (Thorlief Christofferson— another common name with dozens of permutations)? I'm just a beginner at this time and would certainly appreciate anyone's guidance; Thanks!

Do you have a birthdate and place of birth for Eugenia? And where was your grandfather born? If he was born in the US, where were his parents married?
If you check other census records, you might find a place of birth for Eugenia. If she married in the US, a marriage record could show a father's name. A shipping record could show her place of origin as well.
Once you have a birthplace, it is possible to find her in the Swedish records.

Thank you Pinefamily, I only know that she told the 1920 census taker in Hennepin county, Minnesota that she came over to USA in 1904 and that in 1920 she was 39 years old – hence she was born supposedly in 1881. My grandfather Thorlief was born in Oslo Norway, supposedly in 1902, emigrated to the USA in 1917 according to statements given to the census taker. I found the little information that I have about him and his mother while on a free trial with ancestry.com... there are so many ancestries sites offering this that and the other and every one of them is expensive. You think I could find out about her and maybe him too anywhere that DOESN'T require a subscription?

Hi philos

As you said there is a Thorleif Christofferson living with Euginia Johnson in Minnesota in 1920 as a nephew but he was born in Norway. Do you know if Thorleif was born in Norway. I have found a Euginia Johnson in Sweden with the roughly the same date of birth and the same year of emigration, but I need a little more info before I pursue her.

Actually the more I look at the census I believe Thorleif to be the nephew of the family Brown living at the same address. The wife of Richard Brown, Lottie, her parents were Norwegian.

What do you think?
I, we, need a little more info on your family.

*Just seen the title of your PM*

I need to know what you know of Thorleif. Do you know his birth date etc.

And I must ask why you think Eugenia is his mother?

Philos,
Did you find the information on ancestry in the records, or on a member's tree? The reason I ask is that the trees uploaded to ancestry are notorious for incorrect information. If the 1920 census has Thorleif as a nephew, that is how you should approach it, until it can be proven otherwise. It does seem more likely, as they went to the US at different times.
In answer to your question about subscriptions, unfortunately there isn't a lot you can find out without one. The kind people on Rootschat do look up a lot of things for others though.  :)

I had actually found this before I knew Oslo was involved. This could be Thorleif:

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01036392148992

Here is his birth. But the dates differ:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ew5/
and
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NWV4-CM9

Marie Gulbrandsen nee Hansen remarried in 1910. She re-married as Marie Kristoffersen. Here is his death Kristian Kristoffersen:
http://www.arkivverket.no link broken

Here is a link which could be your Thorleif. I haven't found a passenger list for him but 2 crew lists for a Thorleif. 1 deserted and 1 left in New York. (I hope it works).
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ew4/

But to see these lists you will have to be a member of: (It is free):
http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/signup

I have given you a lot of info here. I am not saying this is your Thorleif but this could be a start. It looks promising but we must find more info to prove all this.

I have found who I believe to be Eugenia in Sweden. I'll get back with her later on sometime.

I hope all the links work.

Here is the link to the Norwegian Records:

And what is the connection between Eugenia and Thorleif?

Hi pinefamily

Thanks for that....which ones?

I have no idea what the link is with Eugenia and Thorleif. I don't think she was living with him. The house numbers are 299 and 300. Maybe the enummerator got it wrong.
Maybe I am wrong.

The death of Kristian Kristoffersson, and one of the links for Thorleif's birth.
So possibly the family connection is with Lottie Brown, as you suggested above.

Thanks.

The parish in Oslo is Sagene.
The birth record is from 14 June 1903.
The death record is from 2 November 1901.

I hope this link works better:

Philos,
Did your grandfather live in Wisconsin at all? There is a Thorleif Christoffersson in Wisconsin in the 1940 census, but with a birth year of 1894.
There is also a Torleif Kristoffersson died in 1908 in Hennepin, Minnesota, aged 18.
Title: Re: Looking help searching for Eugenia Johnson born in Sweden Circa 1881

I would suggest one of two ways to approach this. Either you can go to your nearest public library, where you should be able to access ancestry for free. Then you can find your grandfather in other US census records, to compare ages and/or birthplaces, and go from there.
Alternatively, post a lookup request here on the US board. Someone will kindly look up your grandfather in the census records, as long as you provide as much info as you know about him.

Hope this helps.

Sorry I didn't get back to much, much earlier. I didn't come to my computer at all yesterday as it was the last day here of my son's short five-day visit. I very much appreciate you taking the time to look into this.

My mother has always said that her father Thorleif Christopherson was the son of "Aunt Jenny." No proof of that so far. She was supposedly born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1881 and he was supposedly born in Oslo, Norway on june 21, 1902. I should go read your other posts before replying any further...

What do you think?
I, we, need a little more info on your family.

Thank you pinefamily! I had a hard time finding this thread again, sorry. The answer to your question is no, not as far as I am aware, NO connection to Wisconsin at all. Also this guy – my grandfather – married my grandmother around 1930, and my mother was born to them in 1933

The rest of this post is in answer to Ian, who suggested that I uploaded some of our private messaging to the thread for better results– — —

Ian said:
To find more info I must have more info. I didn't understand your PM.

Who is Agnes Gallagher?
How do you know it is her in 1940 with name Bergquist?
Do you know she had the name Bergquist?
How do you know it is Torleif in 1920?
Are you guessing about this Addaire Johnson on the passenger list? According to the list she was visiting her cousin in New York.

Have you got a copy of the Naturalisation Cert. I would like to see it.

To find people through the censuses is very tricky. There are many people that have the same names and dates. I need a lot of info to dig deeper. It is very easy to get caught up with the wrong people chasing dead ends.

I suggest you putting the info in your thread so other people can look at it too.

Ian

Phil answered:
Thank you in, you are right I should put the info into the thread. I'm always looking for a reply button and never seeing it lol. Let me see if I can answer the questions

1) Agnes Gallagher was my mother's mother. She came from County Leitrim, Ireland to New York in 1921 according to her petition for naturalization in 1942. Meanwhile she had married Torleif Christopherson on <looks like> July 5, 1930. It appears from this document that she was taking advantage of the opportunity to change her name officially, in the very same act of Naturalization, to Agnes Christophesen. On the document Line 1 shows this change and prior names but it is a little blurry. Nevertheless she did sign at the bottom very legibly Agnes Christophesen. I'll try to attach a copy of her Petition for Naturalization.

2) Eugenia Johnson was my mother's father's mother. She is the one who later became Eugenia Bergquist. That must have happened in between the 1920 census and the census of 1940. I myself saw the 1940 census document but I did not make a copy of that. I DO have a .jpg file copy of the 1920 census showing her as a single woman with <disbelief> Thorlief Christofferson as her nephew.
My mother is still alive and she has told me repeatedly that Eugenia was born in Sweden and also was the mother of her father, not his aunt as was written up in the 1920 local census. The story was that he came over much later, in 1917 if the 1920 census record is correct, having jumped ship, so there may not beyond a record of him coming through Ellis Island at all.

If you use Dropbox you should be able to follow this link and find Agnes Christopherson's Petition for Naturalization:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/g50pww4odobku1r/NewYorkNaturalizationRecords1882-1944ForAgnesChristophesen.jpg?dl=0 night did have good data

Here is the dropbox links to the 1920 census taken in Minneapolis city, Hennepin County, Minnesota:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/qt6rcv5fynbzo54/census1920_Euginia%20Johnson.jpg?dl=0

Thank you for being such a help!

He married my grandmother Agnes Gallagher who became Agnes Christopherson when they were supposedly married on July 5, 1930 (I haven't seen solid proof of that only the reference in Agnes' Petition for Naturalization in 1942). He left their family three or four years after my mother (Jean Christopherson) was born, and basically disappeared. I was unable to find my mother's birth certificate anywhere online. Needless to say, I haven't found any record of what became of Thorleif afterwards either. In the final analysis, I want to find out whether he descends from Swedish blood or Norwegian blood. The story is that he was born in Oslo, Norway but no proofs so far.

Thanks

Philos,
As I suggested above, I still think you need to find both Thorleif and Eugenia in every record you can, their marriage, death and census records. That way you can fill in as complete a picture as you are able.
Regarding Eugenia, you really need to find some documentation that she was Thorleif's mother. The 1930 census might help, as long as they are still living together.

From everything Ian has found so far, it would seem that Thorleif is of Norwegian birth; the name Thorleif is not very common in Sweden, but is in Norway. It is curious that Eugenia was born in Sweden.
From the census record, it would seem he was from Norway.

Had a quick search on familysearch, and the only likely candidate for Eugenia in the 1930 census is a Eugenia Johnsson b. 1888 Sweden, living in Hennepin.
There were no Eugenia Bergquist's.

The New York City marriage index has a marriage for Agnes Gallagher & Torleif Christopherson on 5 Jul. 1930 in Manhattan.  You can check this index (and others) for free at www.italiangen.org.  The marriage certificate should have his parents' names listed, but you might need to either purchase it or look it up on microfilm at a Family History Center.

Hi shelleyesq and thank you for that piece of information— Great news! I'm saving the Italiangen.org to my favorites. That is my grandmother and grandfather there I'm sure because that's the date they gave as their marriage date on other official documents that I have seen. You're right, the marriage certificate should have his parents' names listed. Thank you so much again! that should hopefully tell me if he was a Norwegian blood or if his father was equally+- as Swedish as his mother.

Hi Ian, thanks for looking. Looks like you hit the jackpot there because that's the right birthday, according to his wife's later Petition for Naturalization(1942). My mother would be extremely interested in seeing her father's picture (granted, from a younger day) after 75 years! Any ideas how I can see this beyond subscribing to Ancestry?

Hi

At last.
I have now managed to find the Christophersen family in Oslo. And the great news is that a Eugenie Johannesson is living with the family in 1900 as a servant.

1900 – Oslo:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01037045027771

Eugenie was Swedish and born in 1880.

1910 – Oslo:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01036392060980

According to the census Thorwald was living at “Lenox Mass. Amerika”

1915 – New York
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K95Y-T6T

Thorvald Alfred Martinius Christophersen with son Erling.

It looks like he travelled back and forth between Norway and USA. There are a number of travel records on Ancestry. I wonder just what kind of relationship he had with his wife.

I do believe this to be your Thorleif and his family in Oslo. The passport application for Thorleif was an emergency one, so I suppose he was to travel to USA pretty quickly.

Thank you Ian! That is some pretty persistent and amazing sluething that you have done! I would love to see that record and show it to my mother – she was always a firm believer that Eugenia was Torleif's mother! One of the moderators here suggested that we not use Dropbox and instead attach the photos and documents here. In the interest of open exchange of information I have to agree with her. I just could not figure out how to do it and so suggested using Dropbox. It was a pretty open secret in the family that Eugenia was not his aunt despite it appearing that she was on the 1920 census document. I'm going to try and doubly confirm this by requesting the actual marriage certificate of Torleif and Agnes' from the New York office. That should set it in stone. You did a great job and a huge service! – maybe I'll discover some long-lost cousins eventually out of this process. I can't thank you enough for all of your efforts :-) I hope what goes around comes around in spades!

Thorwald became a sailor later on in life. He died in New York 30 Jul 1927. On one of the passenger lists from 1924 it states that he was a widower. He did though travel quite a number of times backwards and forwards from Norway to USA and evidently met Eugenia in his household as a maid on one of his trips as he wasn't in Oslo at the birth of Carl Thorleif.

I wonder if this is your grandfather in the 1940 census - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VYHQ-B7S  The status of divorced and the indication that he lived in New York City in 1935 seems a possible match.  As you may know, Reno was a popular destination for people seeking divorces in those days, as they only required a brief residency there to make the spouse eligible for a divorce.

Considering that census record, this entry - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JK25-RPL - on the Social Security death index for T. Christophers with the same birth date as your guy is interesting.  Another version of this database says his Social Security number was issued in New York before 1951.  His last residence was in the town of Fernley, Lyon Co., Nevada.

Here's an apparent mention of Torlief & Agnes' divorce case - http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/75308881/  You can see some of the text by scrolling all the way to the bottom.

The Reno Evening Gazette has a mention from 19 Jan. 1945 of Torleif Carl Christophersen, age 44, getting a marriage license with Ora Mae Barr, age 31, both of Reno.  A family tree has Ora married 3 times and dying 7 Feb. 1985 in Reno with the surname Rogan.

In the Nevada State Journal from 2 and 3 Jun. 1947, there is a personal ad that says "I, Carl T. Christophersen, will not be responsible for any debts contracted by anyone other than myself from this day on - June 2, 1947."  Presumably, that was when he separated from wife #2.

I have now managed to find Eugenia's passenger list. It is on Ancestry under "Massachusetts, Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1963".

She is registered as Eugima Johansen and as a Norwegian. She arrived in Boston 5 May 1904 on the Ivernia from Liverpool. She is to meet up with her cousin R.H. Hanson living at 179 Whitenut Street, Quincey, Massachesetts. (hard to read the address).

Indeed 'shellyesq', you have done some prodigious investigating and it is beyond interesting and I am beyond thankful for all your help. These discoveries put all of us the remaining family much at ease; somehow it is comforting to know where your Mystery grandfather and mystery great-grandmother went with their personal history. Thank you very much!!

Hi Phil

There are 2 records from the Minneapolis Directories of a Eugenia Bergquist being a widow of a John Bergquist living at 905 E Lake. In the previous years there were 2 John Bergquists that were tailors by profession in Minneapolis. One of them could be Eugenia's husband. There are 2 deaths of 2 John Bergquists in Hennepin.

Eugenia Bergquist death in Hennepin, Minnesota in 1966:

I have been tracing a family with a Eugenia Johannesson from Värmland Sweden born 7 Aug 1880. (Note the death record of Eugenia Bergquist – born 3 Aug 1879). The family lived pretty near to Norway. The books state that a number of family members including Eugenia have been working and living in Oslo, Norway.

I have managed to trace most of the members of this family to Hennepin and Minneapolis and Minnesota. So this looks like to be an excellent candidate for your Eugenia.

I can also say that I have found a couple of records of Eugenia coming back to Sweden in 1910 and in 1914 with her sister Maria Johnson.

The correct state of events:

In 1938 Eugenia was still living at 2814 31st Av S. The same address as in the 1920 Census. Then in 1940 John Bergquist was living with Eugenia at the same address.
I am sorry but the 1935 deaths of John Bergquist are not correct.

So here are 2 death records of a John Bergquist between 1938 and 1948 that could be him.

1943

1948

I had recently updated this family tree at Geni.com and was amazed to find all this info at this site.

I believe Thorvald Alfred Martinusen Christopherson (1860-1927) is my 1st cousin 2R. His profile is at Geni. com at https://www.geni.com/people/Thorvald-Alfred-Christopherson/6000000061146622594
I have his parents in the family tree and ex-wife, Eugenia Bergquist (Johnson) (1880-1966) profile is https://www.geni.com/people/Eugenia-Bergquist/6000000111641005838

Eugenia Bergquist (Johnson) was not married to Thorvald Alfred Martinusen Christopherson, but had son,1902 Carl "Torleif" Thorleif Christoffersen (1902-1978).
