Trying again to find this man's parents.
All I have for his birth is the 1841 census, where it just says Lincolnshire for place of birth. Have never found a baptism. He married Elizabeth Crosby (b 1814 Morton by Bourne, bap 24 Nov 1814 New Sleaford) 31 May 1831, New Sleaford. In 1841 they were living in Old Sleaford, and they went to America in 1843. Usually you can pick up a birth place on the census from 1851 onwards, but the next census they are on is Baltimore, Maryland, USA which just gives his birthplace as England.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Have just looked up their marriage, Thomas and Elizabeth were married by licence. If you got a copy or saw the licence that might give you more details i.e. fathers name.

I don't know how to do this - can you advise please?

Where did you get those dates? I have Elizabeth's baptism at Morton by Bourne 24 Nov 1814, and I have the registration of her birth at New Sleaford for the same date. I thought Thomas might be Sleaford alo, but no sign

Thomas' age in 1841 was given as 35 which (if correct) would indicate a birth 1801-6.
There seems to be no baptism for Thomas in Sleaford but there was a BARNETT couple (Robert and Ann) who were having kids bap'd there around that time. I notice Tom's 2nd son was Robert. However there was a Mary BARNETT there who also had one bap'd there. :)

The Passenger list for the ship they went to America on gives his age as 39 and year of birth as abt 1804 and he was supposedly 36/37 when he married in 1831. There's a Thomas born in Donnington in Holland in 1804, but I'm thinking he was like Topsy, and just grew :)

Who supposes that?
Check your subtraction anyway. ;)

The 1841 Census days he is 35 at that time, and Elizabeth is 25 - Thomas is a Bricklayer. That would make Thomas born 1806 and Elizabeth 1816, but the ages on the Passenger list disagree. Very confusing. And their was no age for marriage it was just the age the tree programme said they were.
So how do you know which age is right?

if you try lincstothepast.com web site (free) you will be able to see most parish records.
Click on advanced search.
Type in Sleaford par on the first line
then marriage on the second line.
then scroll down to see the year you need.
The archives have some copies of marriage licences, they do give more information, names and relationships. Good luck.

Thank you. I do use that extensively, and have spent hours looking for Thomas' birth with no joy. There is a Robert and Ann Barnett who had children about that time - unfortunately all I can find is daughters :(
I will check out the marriage.
