Title: Brothers Surname?
Post by: partoon_researcher on Sunday 01 March 15 16:12 GMT (UK)
Has anyone come across Surnames in a will being written in lower case?
I welcome any thoughts of alternative names on this.
I believe the Surname was Hand but find it unusual that it would be written with a small h instead of a Capital.
First letter of Surname looks the same as the s in son and j in John so difficult to decipher.

Thanks in advance for looking

Is there another capital H to compare it to?

My first thought when I looked at it was that it was a capital P.

But if you are relatively sure that the surname is Hand then perhaps that is the writer's way of doing a capital H.

It is certainly different from his small "h" (as in hereby for example)

Hi,

I read the Surname as Isant, take a look at the I  further down "I the said testraix"

This said it also looks like the J in John.

What date is the will?

It is certainly a very standard capital H - here are some other examples:

Do you know John Copper's fathers name or Ann's husbands first name also a location in the Will  or where the Will was probated. Try and track down a marriage for Mrs Ann Cooper

Or look for a marriage of the son John Cooper or other children - it might show mother's maiden surname?

Have you looked on Family Search?  Huge number of Hands and Coopers in late 1700s and early 1800s. When did Ann Cooper die?  Where did she live? Are there any of her children that have the name Hand as a middle name?  Perhaps this clue as to the MS of Ann Cooper being Hand need not succeed or fail just on this one will?

Hi dobfarm and shanreagh
and Thank you for your time

Anns husband was William Cooper of West Bromwich my 4x great grandparents Their daughter Sarah Cooper is my 3x great grandmother
That Sarahs parents were William and Ann Cooper I am certain, and that this is definatley the Will of Sarahs mother.

I have found a marriage for William Cooper and Ann Hand in Cannock Stafford 31st December 1759 their children then born in Cannock and later West Bromwich do fit with Sarahs siblings.
I just find it a bit strange that they had 11 children but in my research i haven't come across any other mention of the surname Hand with any of the coopers, no mention of them in wills or later in census so really i was just wandering if maybe someone else would read it differently.

Have you  tracked of Ann's siblings? She was close obviously to the one in the will so were any of his children named for her? If The Hands came from Cannock and then William/Ann moved to Bromwich then as they did not stay in the locality you may not have got all that mixing and marrying that happens in stable localities where sisters marry the cousins/brothers of their  brother in law etc etc.

I'm wondering if that surname is Isart.

An old thread but agree with Isart...

I've just been doing some research on a family same name later Ysart, pronounced Eesart.
