Title: Looking for Children of William Henry De Gray and Sarah Taylor
Post by: amandar on Friday 27 February 15 22:23 GMT (UK)
Hi

Have found a baptism for William Henry Degray and Harriet Degray on the 4th March 1857 at Oldbury, Worcestershire.  Would like to know if they had more children.  Looking in particular for Mercy born circa 1863.  Haven't had any luck so far.

Regards

Amand

In 1901 census with husband Isaac Mason and says she was born circa 1863  and daughter Phillis age 16 and other children.  Have spoken to relatives and have all said she was called Mercy De Grey.  Have never been able to find anything to confirm.  Mercy De Grey was my Great Aunt Maud's grandmother.  She said I think she a brother William Degrey

Have you got Mercy's marriage certificate?

No, the marriage only close to Phillis Birth of 1884.  I know she was the eldest is to a James Isaac Mason and a Mercy Hadley. I don't know whether in later census records he just used Isaac.  I have found a Sarah Degrey marriage to David Hadley on the genealogy site don't know if it is linked yet. I think I will need to send for Phillis birth certificate to confirm parents. I know Phillis Mason married Benjamin Tallett in 1903 West Bromwich

So you think this marriage:

Marriages Dec 1883
HADLEY    Mercy        W.Bromwich    6b   1219
MASON    James        West Bromwich    6b   1219

I agree that certificates would help

1861 census it is showing a Sarah Hadley mother  born Oldbury with a William De grey  born 1847 and Harriot De Grey born 1847.  Found they were both baptised 1857 saying father's name William Henry De Grey.  Would like to find the family in 1871 census to see if Mercy appears

Many Thanks

Question?
Just been looking at this, why is Mercy a Holloway now?

The enumerator may have misheard Mercys surname

amandar,

Saw that 1881 census but did not post it as getting to bedtime.

It says on that census that Aaron is brother to wife - presumably that is just a mistake, as is that recording of Mercy's name in 1881 as Holloway (or similar spelling when it should be Hadley).

I do not know why your family always thought that Mercy was a Degray.

As Mercy was never actually a Bracknell, then for whatever reason this name was never mentioned to your great-aunt and she only ever heard about De Grey (it is a more distinguished surname, with illusions of grandeur).

We also have a Jane A Cooper in 1881 with the Bracknell family as an unmarried daughter (!), not necessarily relevant to sorting out Mercy, but seems to show what a lot of marriages, deaths and births to different related couples going on.

Added:
Wondered if Jane A Cooper is actually a Hadley, and a niece, but still looking for her in previous censuses.
No births on free bmd for Jane A Cooper or Jane A Hadley (or Bracknell).

Hi,

Thank you all for your help.  Going to send for birth certificate of Phillis Mason to confirm parents name. I think it is going to say mother's name Mercy Hadley, I will be surprised if it says otherwise.

many Thanks

I'm searching within this line as well. I am descended from Thomas Hadley. Son of David Hadley. What I have been able to piece together is that Sarah was married to William DeGrey, after he passed she married David. I suspect that David may have previously been married to an Eliza Ball. I think Thomas may be the only child of David and Eliza. Then they had Aaron together. I'm trying to follow the paper trail and the dna to confirm this. I'm in contact with a Mick Hadley who is descended from Aaron. If it helps at all my great grandmother in this line had a sister named Mercy, so it is a family name down through the Hadleys.

Hi my great aunt maud Brown Nee Tallett. Had always said her grandmother was Mercy De Grey. She took some finding. Before I received her daughters birth certificate, I would have been surprised if it was anything but Mercy Hadley. Not managed to find her marriage very to Issac Mason. 1911 they are both living in Stanley, Wakefield. I will look later on my tree. I have a photo of Mercy (four generations) if you want me to send your details I can send you the info I have got or visa versa
