-
The laws of England & Wales allow anyone to call themselves anything they like!
Just as long as there is no intention to deceive or defraud.
Do you know that he is actually dead?
RootsChat has a policy of not naming living, or potentially living, people.
FreeBMD has a potential birth in Stepney, 1929?
-
Has he definitely died?
If so - when was he born? You can search freebmd under both names - using the dob as a guide.
If not - then you need to remove his name from here.
-
There is a marriage on freebmd in Kensington 1959 which could be him ;)
-
hi there yes i have it that he has died some years ago . he was born 1926
-
Hi yes i saw the marriage of 1959 . and that could be him he married a few time in his life but could not find any more marriages ... or any death so must have been after 2007

J.18 as that would have the right date of 1959 ...
5. How can I find out if a deed poll was enrolled?
5.1 Deeds poll 1851-2003
Visit The National Archives in Kew and consult the indexes to enrolled deeds poll. The indexes cannot be searched online.
For 1851 to 1903 first consult the indexes in C 275 - they show only the former name. This will enable you to access the relevant document in C 54. Indexes and the enrollment books for 1903 to 2003 are in J 18. The indexes show both the former and the new name, either as a note or a cross-reference.
Indexes from 1945 to 2003 can be consulted freely, but you will need to register as a reader if you want to:
consult indexes from before 1945
view the original deed poll and/or purchase a certified copy
If you cannot visit in person, our website explains how you can pay for someone to do research for you.
5.2 Deeds poll 2004 to date
Contact the Royal Courts of Justice for details of enrolments since the end of 2003.
5.3 Deeds poll 1914 to date (online)
Search the London Gazette on The Gazette website by name for the person you are researching. From 1914 all enrolled deeds poll had to be advertised in the Gazette.

I would be searching the London Gazette (5.3)
-
could not find anything in the gazette
-
As I said - you can call yourself anything you like!
You don't need a Deed Poll ;D
-
Yes. as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes you can call yourself anything you like.
I had an older cousin who changed her name, and then married so after 2 name changes she became by co-incidence Elizabeth Taylor!
-
yeah the information i have was that he did it in 1959 by deed poll ;)
-
yeah the information i have was that he did it in 1959 by deed poll ;)
Perhaps you will have to recheck your source of information.
The bride in the 1959 marriage looks to have remarried in 1963. You could look for a death/divorce within those dates.
-
Hey heywood
I know he was still alive early 1970s.. not sure what you mean check my sources??
I know they divorced sometime in the 60s and she remarried . am not looking her side ..
-
Hi
There are only 2 Jones/Kurban children
1 in Jan Qtr 1928
I in Jan Qtr 1929
Neither have the name William
Margp
-
Hi yes i found those two children which makes me think he must have changed his whole name not just his last name and has to be one of theses two children
the parents married in egypt in 1924 jones/kurban army marriage
in 1959 bill changed name to Bill Kurban on his marriage it has him as William G Kurban ... his mothers maiden name ..Kurban ..
so not sure what his name was before that and weather his death would be under new name as he disaapered
-
Perhaps he was born in Egypt, after the marriage but before they returned to England and had the other two children. Thus explaining why you cant find his birth.
When did his father die? Have you looked for a Will for his father or mother, as that might give more clues about him.
OR, maybe he was born before the marriage and thus was registered under Kurban, only using the name Jones when his mum married, but reverting to Kurban on adulthood.

Hello,
Your response was "yeah the information i have was that he did it in 1959 by deed poll" which I had understood to mean that you had been told this and did not have the details of the deed poll.
Apologies, if I misunderstood.
Have you checked his marriage under his new name? I am not sure but there may be some indication on there - 'previously known as' or whether he names Mr Jones as his father.
Do you have the area where he was living in the 1970s to check for deaths there?
It all seems rather vague.
-
I agree Heyward, you seem know a lot about his life, so we need to know the full details, did he have any children, if so, just give the basic details and no names, he may have emmigrated
-
Hi and thanks for the info
the info i have is that the family thought he was born in Uk London 1926. he could have been born in Egypt the problem i have is i do not know his name before he changed it . the family think it was Bill Jones and in 1959 he changed it to his mothers madian name . he defy changed it before his marriage in 1959 to Ann this marriage lasted a few years and she remarried. he did have a son with this marriage but the child was not named after his surname .
Tried to find marriage in eqypt but only knowing it was a jones . on his marriage it has him as william G Kurnban . he worked with the bbd for years as sound recordist and is credit in lots of books as he claimed everest with climbers in 1970s this can be found under Bill Kurban. tried finding a will of his father Thomas G Jones who married 1924. but nothing as yet.. he could have we'll emigrated and think that is a possibility .
-
Is Mr Jones, Thomas E or Thomas G?
-
thomas E Jones ..
-
he did have a son with this marriage but the child was not named after his surname .
According to GRO index it looks as though he was
The Everest trip appears to have taken place in 1971

-
May I please butt in to note there's a living person of that name residing in one of the Australian States.
Cheers, JM
-
thomas E Jones ..
May I confirm that it is just this man who you are interested in finding?
I am concerned that the avenues available to search for the wider family are concerned with living people, even though none have been mentioned as yet.
-
No this man thomas had a son called Bill born 1926 its him i am interesting in finding but if there is any info on Thomas that would be great
-
As you can see we are not getting very far.
Is this correct?
Your information says that 'Bill' changed his name by deed poll. He may have changed his first name also as you have no birth record for him.
You have some reference for him up to 1970s because of his occupation.
You know his father's name.
I can only think that you try to find out about the name change through records.
You try to find his father's death and perhaps a will.
You are already aware of the information found on here which could be quite sensitive as people could still be living.
It seems to be too difficult a task. Sorry.
-
I think i mention his bane was changed to william G Kurban which is on his marriage . so could have been william G Jones. I know his fathers and mother names .
Finding the name change was what this post was about ......
No sensitive info on here
but thanks for trying
-
I meant that the subsequent finds re William G's marriage could be sensitive, which you have said you are not interested in but we have discussed.
Your first post did say you wanted to find out if he changed his first name also and you said in a later post that he could have changed his whole name.
However, if his name is William Jones then that would help you re the deed poll information.
-
As Thomas E Jones married Salina Kurban in Egypt have you looked at possible Jones births on the GRO consular births index :-\
-
thank you the only two birth i found in uk jones/kuran were two diffrent names and diffferent birth year which makes me think was he born in uk if he wass born in egpty then cant find any birth for overseas births with his name. or are they wrong and it was not just his last name he changed needf to get the two birth cert to check who those parebnts are.. as could not find any death for any of them not even a salina jones who i know eneded up in a meantal instutution ..
-
Who is Salina Jones? Is that the same person as Salian Kurban you mention in your first post? Is one a typo - Salian or Salina? When and where was she in the institution?
-
Salina Kurban was from syria she married in Egypt in 1914 becoming Salina Jones on marriage index says Salina
-
I think you are talking about Bill Kurban who was a sound recordist for the BBC he worked on Blue Peter and was one of the sound guys on the Everest ascent in 1971 which failed just below the summit.
He was my uncle on my dads (Edward (Ted) Jones B.1928 London- D.1993 Wrington Near Bristol) side and he died in 1977 in Spain, he had a son Kieran.
My name is Graham Jones and I have a brother Colin we think he changed his name in the 60's as he was credited on Blue Peter as Bill Jones, I can remember he got us Blue Peter badges and autographs from the presenters.
Bills mother was Selina Kurban 1896-1988 she died in Brentwood Essex, father was Thomas Ernest Jones of Oswestry Wales 1900-1949 they married in 1924.
There are still relatives in Lebanon, Selim Kurban who I think is Selina brother so my great uncle he was writing our mother maybe 10 years ago, I have tried to make contact as there are connections with the American University of Beruit (AUB) I think Selims son was an electrical engineer (as I am) it seems to run in the family, unfortunately he died young, I believe there is a scholarship at the AUB in his name, but I have hit a dead end as I think they spell it differently there.
Any way hope this helps, feel free to get in touch
