Hi all,
I am planning a trip to the UK this summer and am trying to find a marriage from Kent.
Have located 10 children of John RICHARDS and Elizabeth -the first children appear to be twins
christened in Charlton on 11/8/1816. No record of a marriage anywhere although one child-
Susanna, bpt on 10/6/1826 has Elizabeth Lucy written beside it.
I would appreciate any help, please, in learning Elizabeth's surname.
Thank you,
Joan in Nova Scotia

Have you ruled out this marriage at St Paul's Deptford (not that far from Charlton): John Richards to Elizabeth Witcombe 5 April 1815 (on familysearch)? Do you have any census records for the family?
cheers,
M

Hi Joan,
Searching Freereg I can't see a marriage but there are two baptisms which if yours would tie in with the marriage record that Maddys52 has given you.

I noticed that both baptisms took place a couple of years after the births so it might be worth bearing in mind that instead of twins some of the 10 children were baptised on the same day.

There is this baptism transcribed as
Susanna Richards
10 Jun 1826
Buckland Kent
father John Richards
mother Elizabeth Lucy Richards
Have you seen the parish register of this baptism to check if it is mistranscribed??

Good morning,
My sincere thanks to all who have replied.
Census 1841 has John and Elizabeth, both 45 yrs with children Sarah and Susanna ages 10 and 15
In 1851 Elizabeth is with son Stephen, age 26, at 121 Charlton Green, labourer's widow. Her age is difficult to decipher, could be 64 or 67 Piece H. O. 107 163
The children I have found were baptised at St. Andrew's, Dover, Kent beginning with Thomas and Mary 11/08/1816. Father is listed as labourer on all records.
I do not know if this will assist but it is the only info that I have.
Kind regards from Joan
One tree on Ancestry lists Elizabeth Stanley or Elizabeth Lucy Stanley as wife of John but no proof is given.

Hello again,
I have been sent some info which suggests that John Richards was a widower who married Elizabeth DAWDEY at St Mary the Virgin Church in Dover. Would it have been possible to misread Dawdey for Stanley or vice versa ? Date was 30 October 1809. witnesses were Wm and Mary Ann Fuller.
Please does anyone have records for St Mary the Virgin church?
Kind regards from Joan

I would say that Elizabeth is 67 in 1851 ( H0107/163 f198 p25 ) 121 is the householders schedule number not house number.
Where are they in 1841 ;D The only one that I can see that almost fits is H0107 465/12 f41 p1
Paper Alley, Charlton, Dover
John Richards 45
Elizabeth Richards 45
Sarah Richards 15
Elizabeth Richards 10
Thomas Grant 45

Hello rosie and rolnora,
Thank you both for your information -I have FindMyPast but could not find that entry!
I am wondering now if John was perhaps married two or three times to an Elizabeth ? It does say widower in 1809 and there is a 22 year gap between the age of Elizabeth in 1841 and 1851.
This just seems to get more mysterious all the time...
I appreciate your assistance very much.
Kind regards from Joan

The records can be found on FindMyPast in their Canterbury Collection

It does say baptisms don't start until 1841 but they do ;D

The good thing is he has signed the register so you have a signature to compare ;D

Have you looked for the birth registrations of the children? After 1911 the mother's maiden name is shown in the GRO index, usually used to check you have found the right entry but in this case you could get some clues there.

You will have to ignore my links for the baptism & marriage - FindMyPast are apparently having problems which they know about ::)
Have you looked for the birth registrations of the children?
The children were born before the start of registration ;)
