Hi Shaggy
Bernard's Smiddy is a roundabout about 2 miles south of Cowdenbeath on the road to the present petro-chemical work at Mossmorran. It is the junction between the road east from Crossgates through to Kirkcaldy via Auchtertool and the road south from Cowdenbeath to Burntisland.

Hya shaggy, hope you are well.
I have a 3xg/grandmother Isabella McNeill married to William Beveridge. They lived in Cowdenbeath or Beath as it was known. She was born 12 May 1812 Bonnyriggs, Midlothian. Her father was George McNeill maried to a Maggie Ferguson. One of the places they lived as far as I know was Crossgates. They had 3 of a family that I know of Isabella, Ann and Archibald. Does any of this ring a bell?

Mt grandfater was born in Donibristle in 1894 and my family has a lot of connections there. It is only 6 miles from where I live now and I have a few photos of the village as it was before it was cut in two by the 'new' road.
A great great uncle of mine was the postmaster and shopkeeper in the village for a number of years from the late 19th century to the early 20th.
If I can be of any help then get back to me

Hi
Research has taken me to Donibristle - would you know anything about "The Tavern, Hill End" and/or family of the name GEDDES?
I believe a daughter went to Canada - Vancouver Island.
Any help appreciated
With thanks

Hya all
found this on the Dunfermline Press by gone days.
http://www.dunfermlinepress.com/bygone_dunfermline/1908_1929.htm
It mentions The Brigg Tavern, Donibristle and there is a photo. I would try the library in Dunfermline, maybe they have some reference books with the tavern in it, you may even find who the landlord/s were.
Hope this helps,GEN10

The Brig Tavern sat at the bottom of the New Row in Dunfermline. It was demolished in the 1980's. It has nothing to do with Donibristle I am afraid. I was only there once and it was a nice wee pub.

Hello CraigJSeath, noticed one of the names you are researching is Beveridge. I come from a long line of Beveridges all in fife. mainly Dunfermline,HallBeath and Cowdenbeath. Where's your line form?

Hello Gen10
My greatx4 grandmother, Margaret Beveridge was born in Halbeath on 21st August 1820, daughter to Robert Beveridge and Elizabeth Penman (m 6 March 1819 at Halbeath).
The only siblings of Margarets I have are Janet (b abt 1821), James (b abt 1824) and Richard (b abt 1825)

try Hutton, Guthrie (1999) "Fife - The Mining Kingdom" published by Stenlake Publishing. It has nine pages of photos of Cowdenbeath, but though there is a paragraph on the Donibristle Disaster in 1901 I don't think there are pics of Donibristle itself.
The library service - Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy have photos on a digital database which you can scan in the libraries, they may be web based, I don't know.
The families of two of my great grandfather's brothers worked there I believe.

Frosty Mountains were a row of houses in Cowdenbeath once used as a hospital when there was an epidemic in the area. Frosty Mountains were at the top of what is now Pretoria Place in Cowdenbeath.

Hy CraigJSeath
Do you have a death certificate for your Robert Beveridge? I think that his parents may have been William Beveridge and Elizabeth Hynd, if they are then we share a branch on the Beveridge family tree.

My Grandparents were Tony and Maggie Geddes who owned The Tavern, Hillend, from 1946-1967. I lived there with them on and off during the 50's and 60's. My mother, Margaret, was the daughter who emigrated to Canada. I have a lot of family research about the Geddes family. What is your connection? What would you like to know?
Cheers,

Hello, just registered with rootschat so that I could reply re Donibristle village. My father was born there on 9th May 1909. I have a photograph of his class at Dontibristle school, taken when he was about 10 years old (I'm guessing). I have a scanned version of the photo and I have the names of about everyone on the photo - you can have copies if you want.

Hi William,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Shaggy's email is currently not working, but I am hoping that I have found one of his relatives so have sent a message about your reply as I sure shaggy will be ever so pleased to hear from you about Donibristle Village.
All the Best

Hi Shaggy
Dunfermline Carnegie Library has a few pictures of Donibristle Village in it's Local History Department collection. You can usually purchase prints although I notice some are marked "copyright of Mr. George Hastie" so may be restricted but it would be worth enquiring. I have always found the staff in the Department very helpful. Contact details below :-
Address: Carnegie Library , 1 Abbot Street, Dunfermline, KY12 7NL

Hello graeme121
I have just checked the list of names which I have for the photo. As far as I can tell the photo dtaes from 1916 or there about. There is no William Seath listed, but there is someone called Alex Seith (the names were given to me verbally by my father, so spellings are not necessarily correct).
William

Thanks for the reply William, I'm almost certain that will be William Seath's Uncle, Alexander who was born around 1904.
-
I'm not sure how much info you already have but ther national library for Scotland has some excellent maps which might be of use... Donibristle is on this one...

I have a photograph of the village school and of Ivy Cottage. My wife's grandfather Jim Skinner lived in Ivy Cottage which is up the farm road on the other side of the B925. If you use Google Street View you can see that the school has been converted into private house(s) and the bell towers have been removed. I'll see if I can post the photographs or create a link to them.
