Hi,
Can anyone help me identify this medal? My GGG grandfather served in the Royal Marines between 1848 and 1869.
Thanks
John

With a name to go with your Marine it may be possible to find him and identify the medal.

Good evening,
I can't find what it is yet but not an official services medal. wrong shape altogether.

It isn't a campaign medal as they were all round...ish or star shaped, it may be a gallantry medal but very hard to tell from the photo.
-
could be a george cross medal?
-
I'd say it was more like a Temperance medal...not military award or campaign.

Following Ady's thought see http://www.stewartbooks.com/Temperance_Medal.htm and http://indiannumismatics.com/products.php?id=76 and Google images although none appear exactly the same.

Possibly a Masonic Medal

Good evening,
I could find nothing that matched the shape amongst the masonic medals. Hard to tell exactly from the slight angle but it appears longer than it's width. I will check out things like the buffalos, lions etc.

Good evening,
After extensive searching I can find nothing similar, Buffalos, Lions or Foresters.

I struggled for a long time with trying to identify a medal worn in a photo by an elderly relative c. 1890 and eventually had it placed into my hand by a distant cousin, it was an award from a local gardening competition generously sponsored by a local landowner. :D
