Title: DAVIES sisters - Sebastopol
Post by: MissyJ137 on Monday 23 February 15 11:43 GMT (UK)
Hi guys,

I'm trying to find a marriage or death record for 3 of my great grandmother's sisters. There is very little that I can find so am hoping that someone can help.

Charlotte Mary DAVIES born 1874 Sago Hill (near Ballarat)
 - 1903 Electoral Roll, Bala Street Sebastopol, Dressmaker
 - 1909 Electoral Roll, Bala Street Sebastopol, Dressmaker

Annie DAVIES born 1878 Sago Hill
 - 1903 Electoral Roll, Bala Street Sebastopol, Tailoress

Winifred Catherine DAVIES born 1882 Sago Hill
 - 1909 Electoral Roll, Bala Street Sebastopol, Weaver

Their parents are Charlotte THOMAS (1841-1903) and David DAVIES (1836-1902). All daughters were unmarried at the time of their parents deaths.

Many thanks,
MissyJ

Thanks for the link Merlin. The previous thread is about the parents David and Charlotte. I've been stuck at this same point for about a year without finding any more info on the sisters.

Hi Missy
Not finding anything for the 3 sisters. ???
Noted in their Mothers Charlottes  Will http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/veo-download?objectId=090fe273802f1261&format=pdf&docTitle=Image&encodingId=Revision-2-Document-1-Encoding-1-DocumentData  (http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/veo-download?objectId=090fe273802f1261&format=pdf&docTitle=Image&encodingId=Revision-2-Document-1-Encoding-1-DocumentData)
that they were all allowed to live in the house Bala St Sebastopol until they married. Might be worth finding land records for the property to see when it was sold.
Also would be worth finding and checking the Death Notices for their other siblings John, Margaret, and Susannah to see if there is any mention of them.
Sorry couldnt be of more help.
Cheers Leonie

Hi Leonie,
It's like they've just disappeared! Do you know how to find land records when I don't have a house number as all the way through the probate documentation and electoral rolls it's only listed as "Bala street".

I'll have to go to Ballarat Public Records Office to get land valuations and the Ballarat library for death notices from the newspaper archives for their other siblings. I've searched the Ballarat Cemetery and can't find any deaths listed under their maiden names so had assumed that they had all married at some point.
Cheers,
Missy

Just to investigate all options, Rootschatters with more access maybe able to provide further information on 5 deaths between 1938 and 1980 with father David Davies and mother Charlotte
If this is your Annie then she lived to a very good age
Death 1980 Annie ? father David Davies; Mother Charlotte

I wonder if this will be any use in pinpointing the house number in BALLA Street.
It is from 1904 Post Office Directory for Vic and gives a little information about the neighbours which could narrow down the search.

Balla street (Sebastopol),
from Albert st.
RIGHT HAND SIDE.
Norton Mrs. Caroline
Davies Miss Margt
Lewis Jno ...Yarrowee st. intersects
LEFT HAND SIDE.
Graham Jas. F
Pengelly Jno
Yarrowee St. intersects
Irving Jno
...Here is Orion St

Bala St. Sebas. was just on the boundary of my stomping ground when I was a kid so I can sort of recall what it was like (just), it was the 1950s after all.
From Albert St to Yarrowee St I recall a few houses on both sides of the Street. After Yarrowee St the South side of Bala St was a paddock, There may have been one house on the corner of Yarrowee St.  the north side I have only a hazy recollection of, maybe a mullock heap. I remember the paddock because we went looking for Yuilles Wool shed and house, we never found the wool shed but did find evidence of the house. Yuille was one of the early settlers before the gold rush so I guess even then I was a bit of a history nut. Oh and Lake Wendouree was Yuilles Swamp.
Very vague sorry but it was half a century ago. good luck with your hunting.

Also have a Rev D M Davies at the Welsh Independant chapel of Zion.

I also found that today. She was living with her brother and his family in 1919 and 1926 in Edward Street and continued living there after he moved. I've found an entry in Ballarat Cemetery that could be hers, but the ages don't match by about 10 years. I need to get the index number so I can order the death certificate.

If the Annie Davies that you found is the one that died 1965 age 77 years,
I don't think she is your Annie.

The entry I was looking at was the one that Sue found with the death in 1988. None of those other Davies are on my family tree so it might just be a coincidence that their was another Annie who was working as a weaver?

I've also got a request pending at the State Library to see if I can get a copy from the Ballarat Courier Archives of the death notices for their siblings John, Margaret and Susannah. It might mention any married names.

Hi Missie

I have been reading this thread just because I grew up in Ballarat.

Would it be possible that the three sisters went back to Wales?  They may have made an agreement with their siblings to sell the house even though they never married.

Hi Missy
Have you got a list of possible marriages for the 3 sisters from the Vic BMD?
Sometimes when you cannot find a death for a married woman you have to look at all the possible marriages and then try to discount them one by one if you know what I mean.

For example I gave you a possible 1915 marriage for Winifred DAVIES to Ernest TURNER.

Also there is a marriage for an Annie DAVIES to Peter Rutherford LLOYD in 1907.
They lived in Ballarat in 1907 1914 and Sebastopol in 1919 then they moved to Melbourne.
Trying to find deaths for them.  ::)

Cheers
Leonie

No death notices for either Margaret or Susannah in the Ballarat Courier, but their brother had one in 1936.

"John was noted as brother of Maggie (Mrs Oliver), Annie (Mrs Redfern), Lot, Sue (Mrs Jenkins) and Win (Mrs Turner)."

It would seem Charlotte was unmarried in 1936.

Yes the TURNER marriage was correct. Now I just have one to find for Annie with REDFERN. Such a relief to make some progress after so much time searching.
