Title: CLOTHES RECOGNITION
Post by: BOJANGELS2 on Sunday 15 February 15 16:19 GMT (UK)
HI, can anyone tell me whether the lady on the left is wearing some sort of religious scarf/dress --the year would be 1919/1920/the little boy is my dad so im sure of the date as he was born 1917 , im trying to work out who the lady and man are to the left of the picture

Hi, presumably you know the couple on the right are. your father has his right hand on the lady's knee so is obviously comfortable with her.

as for the lady on the left side of the photograph, could be wrong but the 'scarf'  just looks like a fashionable detail to me.  she is certainly a contrast to the lady on the right.
no doubt someone will put me straight!
cheers
taffie

hi taffie, yes I wondered if the scarf was some sort of religious thing as it looks like the "scarf" the vicar wears at funerals weddings christenings etc , I know the couple on the right are my grandparents -I also thought the lady on the left looked a lot "posher" than the other lady -- these pictures were amongs many we found when my nan passed away but its eliminating ages and people to find out who these people are --so frustrating x

As far as I know it is only in recent years that women have been involved in a religious life, apart from nuns.  She also is wearing a wedding ring which suggests she does not work ( definitely no disrespect to housewives)
have you checked for siblings of either of your grandparents for a possible match?

reminds me, must write details on back of all snaps

yes have checked my nans sisters -one died when my dad was bornn and the other died in 1921 , so this is what im trying to work out as to whether this could be my nans other sister , as my dad was born 1917 and my nans sister died in 1921 we have a window of 4 years ,---I don't think my dad looked older than 4 years old on that picture so that's a possibility it could well be nans sister ----but then theres another problem , nans sisters husband died in 1917 also ,so who could that man be behind the sister , he has his hand on her shoulder so is familier with her -----and yes taffie ,please write names on back of all your photos lol, x

Hi...I'm wondering if the other couple are your Dads Godparents....He seems to be connected and familiar as his hand is her lap. The lady is also wearing a wedding ring.

hi tree total, yes that's what im wondering as he would be about the age for christening , the couple who are on the right are his (actuall aunt and uncle) as his mom died giving birth to him, so his auntie bought him up as her own --the only mom and dad he ever knew --as well as that auntie ,he had another auntie and two uncles (siblings of his birth mother ) so im wondering if the other auntie  may have been his godmother as she looks very well dressed , and maybe the man behind is his uncle ,AAAAHHHH there are so many family members will I ever get it sorted

I don't want to be morbid, but look at those tails on the lady on the left. There are devices near the ends. The one on the left looks like a skull and crossbones imposed on a cross. Might be worth looking into.

Yes that's why I first wondered if it was some sort of religious scarf

Only thing is people in mourning for a loved one lost in WWI one would expect to be dressed in black or dark clothes. My great aunt had a stepson who was killed at Gallipoli. I have a photograph of his fiance. She was wearing black or dark clothes with a hat with what must be a photograph of him with black edging stuck in her hat. Never seen that before. Perhaps someone with knowledge will read these Posts and elucidate.

Could she be the birth mother's sister in law and the man behind maybe the birth mum's  brother ( you said she had two aunts - and two uncles siblings of the mother).

My grandparents and family used call their in-laws sisters and brothers. I have an old photo post card where my g aunt has written to my *grandmother (*who is my g aunt's brother's wife ) , where she addresses my Grandmother, not by her name but  as sister and sis  - If anyone reads that letter without knowing the family, they would probably assume that the two ladies are sisters and not sisters-in-law.

Kind Regards :)

PS they look like roses  to me and not skulls, set into a cut/dart thingymajig

Think that this could quite easily within the time frame you mention...I don't think their is anything religious about her outfit...the little boy in my opinion is no more than 3 or 4 years old.

I get the feeling that I've seen this picture on here before? or a very similar outfit?

If you ask a moderator to move this to the Photo board the fashion/photography experts will soon give lots of information and dating for the picture but I'm fairly certain that she's wearing a stylish outfit and not anything religious (note the hat!).
