Title: Marriage or Burials in Cheshire, uk c 1800
Post by: juno on Friday 13 February 15 13:41 GMT (UK)
Looking for any further information on Sophia Massey, baptised at Moberley in Feb. 1764.

Not the one married to James Pendlebury in Rostherne, both these partners only 21/22 years old, when Sophia would be 51.

Father was a farmer in Ollerton, near Knutsford, no further details- marriage or burial in surrounding parishes---
Unless mis- transcribed, as appears on some sites as Molloy and Mafsey

do you have her baptism?

29/02/1764 in Mobberley daughter of Richard and Sarah.

There's a marriage 05/02/1787 at Manchester Cathedral between a Sophia Massey and a William Shackleton. Lancs OPC has him as a merchant OTP and Sophia as a spinster (she makes her mark).

as Mobberley is Wilmslow area ( 5 miles between them ) - and Wilmslow is now part of Manchester ,I think that William Shackleton marriage looks a very good possibility .. :)
good find Miriamkinga ....
for Juno - that marriage is on

Having lived near Mobberley (briefly) I would not consider marrying in Manchester.

Unless there is some evidence that she went to work in Manchester, or there is no-one else with a similar name, or family members also moved there etc etc I am highly sceptical of that marriage.

Sorry.

Sorry Chempat but I disagree with what you are saying  :o
I have ancestors from Wilmslow who married at the Cathedral and still lived in Wilmslow afterwards.
Apart from a couple of them when the bride was pregnant and perhaps wanted to save face, I don't really know the reason why, maybe it was cheaper to be married there. ???
The Cprd still has some parishes to transcribe so it's possible that something else will turn up but searching FindMyPast who have most of the Cheshire registers I can't see anything that is a better fit than the marriage that has been given.

I think the marriage at the cathedral-Is a distinct possibility. (the cathedral  was the parish church in those days for vast areas of greater Manchester  something to do with church fees) though not Cheshire.
You are right there are quite a few Cheshire registers not on line at the moment.

It seems likely that either Shackleton as a merchant travelled around, or that Sophia went to work in some capacity in that location,--- if it is the same female.

I was trying to locate Sophia, because I cannot find the burial of her father Richard Massey bap at Rostherne in 1736, and a farmer at Ollerton until at least 1775. when his wife died, and is buried at Knutsford,he was then 40.
I thought the two, father & daughter might be together somewhere.  The other family members are buried at St Johns, Knutsford.

The marriage at Rostherne St Mary in 1797,
is of Ellin Massey to George Okell, she is the daughter of Peter Massey not
 Richard Massey of Knutsford
