Title: Porter Jones Family of New Mills
Post by: Ella Cinders on Monday 09 February 15 18:25 GMT (UK)
Looking for information on the Porter Jones family that lived on Spring Bank in New Mills from 1901-1946.  Porter Jones was a shoemaker.  I do have the 1901 and 1911 census information.  Hoping to find someone also researching this family.  Porter Jones had many children and some descendants have the following surnames: Heery, Thompson, Perkins, Haywood. Would appreciate any information.

Hi

Can you clarify exactly what type of info you are looking for?

If you are looking for his childrens marriages/deaths etc then you can use freebmd to search for that info   www.freebmd.org.uk

If you are researching his ancestry, I notice he was born 1866 in Northants so have you checked the 1871/81 censuses

Thank you for your replies.  Yes, this was a second marriage for Porter Jones, I do have the information regarding his first wife, Annie Jones (nee Ager) who died in 1897 in Kendal and his second wife, Sarah Hannah (nee Shepherd) who died in New Mills in 1946.

Trying to find information on the children of Sarah Hannah & Porter Jones who by now are quite likely deceased.  I posted a message in hopes that someone else may be working on this particular family.  I have the census info. for 1901 & 1911 on this family. Hoping the 1921 will be released early.

Heery, Thompson, Perkins, Haywood

Have you checked freebmd for Jones marriages to those surnames to see if they match to Porters children's names?

@CaroleW
The surnames are the married surnames of Porter Jones daughters i.e. Lily Mary Jones (Owen Heery), Elise Jones (George Thompson), Eva Jones (George J. Perkins) and Alice Jones (Peter Haywood).

This is my family and I live 200 yards from Spring Bank along the same road. There are still quite a few of us around, some local some a few hours away.

@cheery274 who are you descended from? I’m from Albert Jones, son of Porter Jones, who was a baker who lived on the crescent in Birch Vale. My Uncle still lives in Birch Vale.

Hi @ella cinders. Which of Hannah Shepherd’s children are you descended from? I have some family folklore about her marriage to Porter, but it is only what my Grandmother told me. She was Hannah’s granddaughter. Hopefully I can PM you after this post

My grandfather was Owen Heery (Sr) and my dad was Mick who died a few weeks ago. I have a cousin who tod me about Great Grandad Porter-Jones sitting in the window on Spring Bank with nails between his teeth making shoes and the schoolkids thought he was eating them!
