Title: Wooding family of Levin
Post by: pcjr on Monday 09 February 15 01:25 GMT (UK)
I am trying to locate the child of Frank Charles and Ethel Lilian Wooding of Levin.

From what I have read is     that Frank was survived, by his widow and one child, in 1922.

I don't know what gender the child is, nor anything else.
Have looked on different web sites but still nothing has turned up.

Wonder who is this child, any info would be a big help
Thanks
pcjr

Hi

The will of Frank Charles WOODING is available for viewing at the FamilySearch website [New Zealand Probate Records].   It doesn't however mention his child.

Have you looked over the WW1 Army Record for Frank Charles WOODING (available for viewing on the Archives New Zealand website, Archway)  ?

It may be that there is correspondence on file relating to his family ?

Obituary in the 'Hawera & Normanby Star' dated 21.2.1922 states that he left a child...........

Perhaps trying to find descendants of family mentioned could be the way to go?

The couple married in 1919, so presumably the child arrived arrived after that date ?

Have tried the electoral rolls 1930"s / 1940's to see if there is a child living with the mother Ethel.l
[No luck so far. ]

I note that Frank was the son of Richard and Mary WOODING, and whilst there are some online trees for that family, nothing is shown for Frank Charles.    :(

In case it is helpful.......

Mary Jane Wooding married Ernest Charles Wray, 1907.
Ellen Wooding married Robert Henry Moore, 1912.
Elizabeth Ann Wooding married George Thomas Elliot, 1909.
Jessie Nelson Wooding married Rupert Henry Ludwig Russell, 1915.

[These appear to be the sisters mentioned in the obituary for Frank Charles.]

Hi pcjr

I've managed to find the child ( a daughter) on an electoral roll.
Some more digging still to be done though.   ;D

Hi pcjr

After Ethel Lilian WOODING was widowed in 1922, she continued to live in Wanganui until 1928 when she also appeared listed on the Waitemata (Auckland) supplementary roll ( - so the move North probably occurred in that year.)  She firstly lived at Stanley Bay, and from 1935 to 1941 her address was "Hotel Ventnor" in Auckland East.  No occupation given on any e/rolls, she is simply listed as a "widow".

Didn't have much luck at first in finding her residing with a "possible" child until I went back to the 1941 roll.   On the Auckland East roll of that year and also residing at the Hotel Ventnor, was "June Lilian WOODING, spinster".  [The 1941 and 1943 NZ e/rolls are in the "browse-able" only category on the ancestry site and don't turn up results for those years if you're searching the  rolls  online. ]
In 1943* (Auckland East) Ethel Lilian and June Lilian WOODING are both listed at 14 Tainui Road.
[Note:  * Although her name still appeared on this roll, June Lilian WOODING had actually left NZ by that date.   Ethel Lilian WOODING's electoral number however, was amongst those removed from the roll and by 1946 she was living in Wellington, after which she moved to the South Island. ]

As there was no marriage listing for a June Lilian WOODING in New Zealand, I checked NZ deaths in that name, which returned a result for a June Lilian RICHARDSON with the birthdate 2 June 1920, who had died in 2006.   Next to find her husband.  ::)

Thankfully, was able to locate a tree on ancestry for a James Johns RICHARDSON - and whilst it has no information about June's parents - it did confirm that they had been married in Cornwall, England in 1942 (though no actual date is given).

Free BMD (UK) has the following :
Marriages - JUN - 1842
WOODING - June L.
RICHARDSON - James J.
Reg.   Bodmin, Cornwall

Incidentally, Flying Officer, James Johns RICHARDSON was awarded the DFC in 1943 and there is an article at PapersPast ("Evening Post" (Wellington) - 15 January 1943).

I looked for a June WOODING travelling to the UK sometime after 1941.  Of course it was war time and I wasn't too hopeful of coming up with a result.   I think though the following is her (- wondered if she was maybe "in the forces" (in a civilian role) ?? )

Ship:  "Esperance Bay"
From :  New York* to Belfast, Northern Ireland*
Arrived:  (Belfast) 2 May 1942

WOODING - Jane* [sic] L. - aged 21 Years [bc 1921 ] - occupation:  Stenographer
Address in UK :  c/- Mr F. BOND, Bath? (looks like) Hotel, N ... ? Road, Worthing, Sussex.
Future residence :  UK
[Notes:   * The manifest is typewritten but not especially clear.   She is indexed as "Jane" but  the looking at the image, name could just as easily be "June" .   Hard to decipher but seems some of the passengers may have embarked at "Auckland" and some had resided in "New Zealand" (looks like ?) *  Age is certainly correct.
* There is info on various sites re: the "Esperance Bay" ... in 1939, converted into an armed merchant cruiser ...  and from 'Merchant ships during WW2 (Convoys)' - 1941, used for troop transportation and also for military families returning home.  Detached (from convoy?) on 30 November 1942. ]

Outward from UK :   London to New Zealand
Ship:  "Akaroa"  - departed London on 26 January 1946
RICHARDSON - Mrs J. L.  - 25 years - Housewife - not accompanied by husband
Intended Permanent Residence:   New Zealand
Former UK Address:  "Tresco", The Drive, Southbourne, Emsworth [West Sussex]

Ethel Lilian WOODING :

In 1949 and 1954 she appeared on the Ashburton Roll (a widow) living at Alford Forest.  [There were quite a few others named WOODING also on this roll ? ]

June Lilian RICHARDSON & James Johns RICHARDSON (farmer) first appear on the Oamaru roll in 1946.   Later they're on the Ashburton roll at Mt. Somers and in 1957, Ethel Lilian WOODING is also at Mt. Somers  (no specific addresses given).

From 1963 Ethel Lilian WOODING is residing in Christchurch.
In 1981 (last online listing available), her address was 4/138 Papanui Road.
[The RICHARDSON's in 1981, are at Rhodes Road, Taitapu (just outside ChCh). ]

I noticed in your earlier thread that you'd been seeking Ethel's burial (perhaps at Levin with her late husband ? )   It seems more likely now that she died in or near to Christchurch ??

Whilst the info gleaned for the "child of Ethel and Frank WOODING" is based largely on electoral roll "finds", and a birthdate, you may like to perhaps check the NZ Births (on microfiche at a local library) to see where the birth was registered ?  [Sorry, the info is not on the ancestry index, online. ]

If you're wanting to follow up on the family of June Lilian RICHARDSON, then you could maybe contact the Cremation Society of Christchurch ?
Helpfully the online tree for James Johns RICHARDSON (ancestry website) includes his death certificate.   You'll need his death details when making an enquiry :   Died 18 March 1996 at Christchurch Hospital - Cremated at Harewood Crematorium on 22 March 1996.  [His last address was 15 Clayton Street, Amberley.]  He was survived by his wife and three daughters.
