hi
I have a couple, Catherine & Dominic Ganon born 1841 , it says cowlany but that doesn't seem right, she was born 1841 Graffey, both in Ireland. how can ilook up the births, it seems not much census survived from Ireland, so not sure how best to find them.
thanks, angie x

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificates so you will need to see if church records survive.
This site if very useful for checking townlands, parishes, etc.-

One possibility for Cowlany is Coolaney which is a town/townland in County Sligo. There is also a separate town/townland nearby called Collooney. ???
-
There are a quite a few townlands called Graffy. These are in Mayo, Donegal and Fermanagh.

I wonder if this family is connected -Thomas, Anne and Henry Gannon, born 1865-1869 to Dominick Gannon and Catherine Foley - all born in Coolaney, County Sligo.

hi glensman,
thanks for that. my Catherine has children on 1881 census born masbrough, Yorkshire from 1857, one called Thomas which is my interest, born 1868. so I don't think they can be the same, but its very similar. Dominic is deceased by then but I cant find that either. Thanks anyway, angie x

hi glensman, just wondering about the first link with the census in Halifax, why wouldn't their children be on it? according to my census they had 5 by then, could they be in Ireland and be that family you found? the 1881 census says born masbrough but that means they cant be in Halifax as well? my census is spelled GAYNON. getting confused now. angie x

I am not sure why the children aren't on the Halifax census. It is possible that they are not the same couple whom you have already found. Gannon and its variant spellings seem to be quite common. Here are a few births of Thomas Gannon in England between 1865-1868 including one in Dewsbury in 1868:

Here is a link to an old ancestry thread with lots of Gannons in Sligo:

It might be worth posting what you have on the Sligo board where you might get more specific advice.

-
hi Heywood
I have Catherine gaynon 1839 widow from Ireland on 1881 census. then I have Catherine ganon and dominic ganon, 1871 census Halifax , both born in Ireland. but to be fair there should be kids on the 1871 census. im finding it really difficult. my interest is Thomas gaynon born 1868 on the 1881 census with Catherine his mum - as a possible father to Thomas Gainon born 1885 who is a definite. Catherines husband is the mystery to determine who belongs to who.
-
The information I have posted supports 1881 census.
Do you have a marriage for your Thomas with father's name? I just wonder where you have the information about Dominic.
I think Catherine and Dominic are not the right parents unless you have other evidence.
-
It all seems a bit complicated doesn't it.
The main thing is not to jump to conclusions.
You should start with your Thomas' birth certificate. Your other thread quotes the birth, I think.
I can see Thomas snr with 'wife'Mary (Green) but no young Thomas.
1891 3850/ 35/ 13
Mary seems to be then marry Thomas Kilmartin in 1896 and in 1901 your Thomas is boarding, together with John Gainon aged 7 yrs.
1901 4396/106
Is that what you have?

hi,
ive worked back from Thomas E Gainan 1912, only recently deceased, he spoke of a Catherine.
His father died in 1912 - also Thomas Gainon born 1886 - note the spelling change. he was on 1911 census with wife Emma, lodging at her parents in Goldthorpe. We know this to be true.
So to find Thomas Gainon's father - I found Thomas Gaynon 1868 (with Catherine as head on 1881 census) and assumed I was on the right track. They are all local areas to us.
Then of course Dominic popped up.
Do you think ive lost the thread with this 1881 census? looking at it now I think I might be barking up the wrong tree. Thanks, angie x
-
Yes, I think it could be muddled.
The 1881 census may well be true but probably Dominic is wrong.
As you are sure of Thomas who married Emma Farmer, do you have the marriage certificate?
Marriage
March 1908 Doncaster vol 9c, page 932
Emma Farmer And Thomas Gainan are on same page.
This would give you Thomas' father.
Birth
June 1885 Rotherham vol 9c page 637
Thomas Gaynon
This would confirm Thomas' father's name.

hi
yea, ive just spoke to my cousin and she has no idea where 'catherine' came about, so it could be Mary after all. we have the marriage cert for Emma and Tom, so we know that to be true. he died in 1912 as Thomas E Gainan was born, also sibling Sidney Farmer Gainon born 1911 but we think he died as a baby.
i'm going to have to look again at the situation now she told me Catherine is a red herring. Our tom was old though so we can forgive him getting a few names wrong . thanks, I really appreciate your help x
-
If you have Emma and Tom's certificate, who is his father and what is the occupation?
-
hi Heywood,
sorry , got that wrong, we have death certificate of Mary Ellen Brown born 1886 died 1962. the other certificates re for Thomas E Gainan marriage and Tom and Emma Gainon deaths. angie x
-
hi mary ellen brown is not relevant. angie x
