Title: PUDDINGTON family of Tiverton area
Post by: AlexStewart on Sunday 08 February 15 12:44 GMT (UK)
I read that the name Puddington, a village near Tiverton, may come from Putta's estate and
refer to the first Bishop of Hereford. I am trying to help others to discover more about the Puddington family who lived near Tiverton in the 1500s and 1600s. Two brothers George and Robert went to America in 1634.  It has also been suggested to me by an American descendant that there may be a connection with the area of Puddington near Chester which is connected with the Norman name Poitone and Hermon Massey who gained lands there in the time of William Rufus.  Does anyone know of the Puddington family of Tiverton? Is there any evidence for a connection with Puddington near Chester?

How are you getting on with this?

I just tried the name on findmypast - all records - Britain/Tiverton and it came up with 1,247 records, earliest on the first page is dated 1610.

Any use to you? ::)

 Thank you, Mowsehoouse.
This was researched several months ago for an American friend whose family name is now Purington
but it is thought they originate in Tiverton, Devon as Puddington which changed over the years.
I have already the records you mentioned as I am a subscriber to Find my Past. I have sent all  I found to the Purington friend.

All good news then.

It is always a gamble looking at older posts, but I was surprised you had not had a single reply, so I thought I would give it a go.

All the best. :)

Hello,
Would you be willing to pass along any information regarding the Puddington Family? I see that you have done some research in the past. I would appreciate any help you can provide. I am a descendant of George Puddington that migrated to America. He is my 11th Great Grandfather.
I am planning a trip this summer to Puddington and Tiverton and am doing my research beforehand. I am also doing research when I am there. Could you advise where to do such research?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi
Not my family but I did a bit of digging.
The Cape Cod Library of Local history and Genealogy Vol1 suggests George was one of three brothers -Robert ,George and Joshua ,sons of Robert Puddington of Tiverton who died 1630.
Robert and George went to the US.
If that is correct Robert's PCC  Will of 1631 is at the National Archives of Engaland and Wales at Kew and is available online. He was buried at Tiverton 16.2.1630.

Robert has two houses between Barrington St and Bampton st ,next door to each other in Tiverton.
He is married to his second wife Anne by whom he has 3 younger children Thomas,William and Christian(buried 30.3.1625. The children all get £10 a year and his wife gets taken care of for life.

The elder sons Robert ,George and Joshua  get respectively the tenements in London ,the new house in Bampton st now occupied by John Skinner ,Widow Fox and Widow Pearce, and the ancient house next door.
there are 3 daughters by the second wife Katherine ,Alice and Joane.Baptised 15.4.1613 ,18.12.1614 and 14.2.1618. (other daughters Alice 18.11.1605 ,Jone 4.8.1611-5.11.1618 no mothers given).
I'm struggling to find the other children's baptisms.
Widow Anne may have remarried to a Richard Beedle 20.1.1631 .He died 16.2.1638 and she followed 14.4.1639.
Joan the wife of Robert Puddington buried 4.6.1612 was presumably the first wife.
Brother George is an Executor.

So if you are in Tiverton have a look at Bampton St.The house may still be there although I do believe Tiverton had a major fire in the 1600s.

Robert seems to be the son of Ellis Puddington bapt 18.7.1575 .siblings George 26.4.1578 (mentioned in 1631 Will) and Ann 7.7.1583.

Ellis married Jone Staneker at Tiverton 3.5.1574.

The Cape Cope History book suggests George was the grandson of Andrew Puddington bapt 15.3.1530 s of John ,who died 1588 leaving a Devon Will 1588.
Unfortunately most of the Devon Wills were destroyed in a bombing in WWII so I'm not sure if it will have survived.Exeter record office is your best bet.

Hope that helps

Thank you so much for this information Ciderdrinker. I was not aware of Ellis or where to potentially find the documents. I am happy to have found this forum.
Thanks again. :)
