Title: Baptism look up request
Post by: wendyBan on Friday 06 February 15 17:31 GMT (UK)
I am looking for a baptism for a Martin Lister born in Clerkenwell 16 December 1868.

His mother was unmarried at the time but married a John H Hope in Hammersmith on the 17th March 1870.

Thank you Gemma

Just posting a link to your related thread:

I can't see a baptism, and if he had been baptised as a child of an unmarried mother at this date it is extremely unlikely that a father would have been named.

Did you obtain the birth certificate as suggested on the other thread?  That should at least give information as to his exact place of birth, which in turn would enable you to identify the relevant C of E parish.  But even then he might have been baptised in another place, or another denomination, or not at all.

Hello,
Yes I purchased the certificate.  His birth was registered in the Sub district of Amwell Clerkenwell.

I don't know if this helps, but I have a John Lister in my tree, a couple of generations earlier than your Margaret and George.

He got married in St Bride Fleet Street in 1763, and though they lived on Fetter Lane (which is around the corner from St Andrew Holborn) all but one of their children were baptised in St James Clerkenwell.
He was a carpenter / cabinet maker and had only one surviving son, also called John (b1765).

There are chances that Margaret and Martin Lister are related to them...

Hello Tom
Thank you for contacting me, I read your reply with interest.  From what I have found out I know that .
Margaret's father was George Lister baptised in Halifax Yorkshire on the 6 0October 1816 and his father was john Lister born c1796'in Halifax Yorkshire.  It is definitely a coincidence that your John Lister was also a cabinet maker and lived close to where the family moved to.  I wonder if they were related somehow and that is why the moved to the area.  Do you know your John Lister's parents names or where they were born?

Hi Gemma,

oh, that's probably a coincidence then :)

I haven't found out where he was born (yet). According to his death certificate it must have been around 1735, but there's no further information. By the time of his marriage, he was living in London but I don't know whether he was born there or not.

As yours came to London almost a century later, I doubt that there is a strong connection.

Regards,
Tom
