Post by: jamesnpaul on Thursday 05 February 15 13:02 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I am trying to trace the New Zealand ancestry for:John Hamilton,B-1804 Scotland,D-1865 NZ,his Wife:Lillias Hamilton,B-1816 Scotland,D-1881 NZ.Children all born in Scotland:John 1839. James 1840. Alex 1842,D-1819 NZ. Adam 1844,D-1931 NZ. Robert,1848. Janet,1849. Lilias 1853,D-1938. Elizabeth,1857,D-1910 NZ. Joseph,1860.
It seems some of them they lived around Dunedin NZ. Be good to find date of arrive/vessel etc in NZ,
Ancestry.com has no record.

Have this Family on the Scottish 1851/1861 census, living at:Millburn Farm,Parish of Dalserf,County of Lanark, they then seem to have emigrated to NZ,have MI for John Hamilton,D-14th Jan 1865,Wife Lilly,D-5th Feb 1881. Adam Hamilton,D-2nd Aug 1931,Wife Barbara Souness,D-23rd July 1923.
Any census record/B.M.D will be really welcomes.
James

Hi Jamesnpaul,

In your first post you mention New Zealand census records. Although a census is taken every decade, the information collected (including household residents present on the night of the census) is not published as it is for ENG, CAN and USA, for example.

The data seems only to be used for statistical purposes.

For genealogical purposes New Zealand researchers have to reply on other databases such as school records and electoral rolls, etc.

Hello,

You could consider purchasing a death printout for Lillias who died in 1881 and perhaps one of her children. This may give you a lead as to how long they had lived in New Zealand, bearing in mind though that the information was reliant on the informant's memory.

For the information you can expect to find for a death registration go to:

www.dia.govt.nz/births-deaths-and-marriages

-then look for "data collected"

Another avenue to explore is 'Papers Past'. As well as the sons, if you know the married names of the daughters you could be lucky and find an obituary which may make mention of when and how they came to New Zealand.

[Did any of the deaths occur in Dunedin?]

There are many references in 'Papers Past' (website above) to Adam Hamilton. In particular 'The Bruce Herald' and 'The Otago daily Times'. The earliest one I came across was in July 1866.

Hi Jamesnpaul,

Being Scotch and buried at East Taieri would suggest that the port of arrival for their vessel was Port Chalmers, Dunedin. This is also supported by your information that some of them lived in Dunedin.

The birth of the youngest child in Scotland in 1860 means that they emigrated after that date.

What else can you tell us about John HAMILTON? Do you know his occupation? Do you have his death certificate, for instance?

Another possible avenue to have a look at is the 'Otago Settlers Museum', now known as 'Toitu Otago Settlers Museum':

Hi James

There are at least ten trees for this John HAMILTON family on the ancestry website (... is one of them maybe yours ?)

Some contain a good deal of information.

When you say ... "I am trying to the the NZ ancestry for John HAMILTON" .... do you mean that you are wanting details for his children ... and their children ... ???

This death is a possibility for Joseph HAMILTON, born 1860.

Died 10.11.1926, aged 66 years.

Another Rootschatter may find the place of death........

There is a Dunedin (Palmerston) Probate filed 6 December 1926 for a Joseph Hamilton who was a Mill Owner.  Might help with location of death.

Hi Minniehaha,

Well, yes... :) but what I was referring to was that if the last-born child, Joseph, was born in Scotland in 1860, the family's emigration must have taken place after that year. :P :P

Well, I can't see a Joseph Hamilton 1926 on the Burial Locator, and yes, I had my glasses on, but possibly it is late at night for the brain to do exercises.   Wonder if getting the death notice, will help for the burial location for the possible Joseph Hamilton?

Joseph HAMILTON of Palmerston Otago does not seem to fit this family

The East Taieri HAMILTON farmers etc seem to use recurring names which are different from the Palmerston family.

Joseph's birth year 1860 seems to fall outside the pattern.

Is there a Joseph connected with Adam at all ?
