I am researching Robert Henderson McPherson born 1841 in Scotland. He married in 1863 to Jessie Goodlet in Newington, City of Edinburgh.
I have a copy of the marriage which shows both parents names. Robert's father was George ( dec ) & his mother 's name was Elizabeth. I am having trouble deciphering her maiden name.
I wonder if anyone is able to to do so for me please
Many Thanks

Hi AG
Someone has an online tree with Robert's mother showing as Elizabeth Henderson (if you have access via a subs to Ancestry, this is the link here http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/22786939/person/28426869335 ).
You might want to add a small snippet from the marriage entry here so we can all have a look at Elizabeth's maiden name perhaps.
What was Robert's occupation when he married? His marriage age and later docs match that 1840-1 birth year? Did he show as a bachelor when he married Jessie?
The family look to have left Scotland after this birth here it seems in 1870 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQCF-993 As I am sure you will have, but just for info here, the next child Robert in 1872 in New Zealand.
What were the names of the witnesses to the 1863 marriage in Edinburgh? What occupation was given for his deceased father, George?
Jessie Goodlet's birth place on the 1851 census with family is given as Livingston Linlithgow (now East Lothian).

Possible entry in 1841:
Geo McPherson 40 Male Servant b. Scotland
Eliza McPherson 35 Lodg. House Keeper b. Scotland
Rob McPherson 8 b. Midlothian
Helen Anderson 25 Independent b. Scotland
David Anderson 1 b. Ireland
Geo Anderson 5 Months b. Ireland
Jessie Dickson 10 b. Scotland
Alex Howe 20 Writer To Signet Clerk b. Scotland
Address: 26 Cumberland Street, Edinburgh
The 1841 census is the first that is relevant for genealogical purposes, however, it was limited for info that year.
Ages for those over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs normally. You either showed as born in the county where the census took place or showed as born in Scotland (or Ireland etc).
Not sure if this is the right entry so far. Not seeing anything for Robert's birth or christening to these parents so far. Not surprising though as official registration in Scotland only started from 1855. The best you can hope for (and only about a third of events were recorded overall) is an entry in the Old Parish Registers (OPRs).

Thank you ,Monica,
A closer look at this certificate, with a magnifying glass, the surname could be Henderson.. This name is all through the family .....

If you obtained the marriage cert online from Scotlands People, they are very quick to repond to issues of illegibility. They will send out an enhanced section of the image within a matter of days. See www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=1210
Have you got any other info on the questions I asked? We might all be able to help further now with a little bit more info...

Hi Aussie Girl, I am also an Aussie Girl :)
I too have a Robert Henderson McPherson, but I know very little, other than, he is my Great Grandfather.
From my Father's memoirs, he married Sarah McPhail Campbell (she was from the Isle Of Mull), but my Dad thought Robert was always from Maryhill, Glasgow.
They were married in Maryhill, Glasgow.
Three children, Agnes Wallace McPherson, born 1893/94 (my Grandmother)
James, KIA, 1916
Robert (no one knows what happened to him during WWII).
I have no other information, and am also struggling to find out.
It would be great if this links to your RH McPherson somehow.
