Title: Missing Butlin Family
Post by: stacey26 on Monday 04 July 05 21:15 BST (UK)
Hi all

I am new to this chat room but I am hoping that someone may be able to help me.
I have a John Butlin born c1797 marrying a Frances Maria Westbrook 20/10/1828 in Portsmouth. John was according to his naval records born in Hollowell, Northamptonshire. They had a son my 4x greatgrandfather Albert John Butlin born c1840, on the 1851 census he is living with his mother and it is stated that he was born in Portsmouth, 1861 census he says he was born Northamptonshire, 1871 census he says he was born Portsmouth and in 1880 his wife Eliza nee Olding marrys as a widow. I can't find a birth or death entry for Albert.

Back to John & Frances, 12 years seems rather a long time to have a first child even if John was away at sea. John came out of the navy/marine in 1848, where did he go have not found any trace of him since, no census or deth entrys. Frances I am pretty sure is on the 1851 census Butlin mispelt as Button in Portsmouth with Albert, no further trace of her after.

I am praying that there is someone else out there who has Butlin connections in Portsmouth/Portsea area that may be able to help me before I throw my computer out of the window in frustration.

Any info will be so so gratefully recieved.

Thanks
Stacey

thank you for the reply Joe but I'm not too confident that this is my man as none of the other names mean anything to me at the moment but thanks for trying anyway

I am doing the Westbrook family at present.  There is a George in Frances Maria's family so I think it is possible that this could be your missing Butlin family.  It is Joseph Westbrook born 1787 I am following.  The children are: Catherine 1785, Joseph 1787, Elizabeth 1789, Matthew 1791, Wm 1795, John 1798, Sarah 1799, George 1802, James 1804 and Frances Maria 1807.

In your first post you state Albert John's wife was Eliza "nee Olding" - is this correct?  Per 1871, they are together with stepson William. He is likely William OLDING Q1 1860 Portsea mother HILL

Also important to note:

In 1851 Albert's mother is listed as MARIA age 44 a Widow and Blind. So her death may be recorded with Maria as her name

In 1861 he is listed as ALFRED J BUTLER age 21 a Servant, Baker

In 1841 the family could be at Southampton Row Portsea as:

Maria BUTLAND age 32 born Hampshire, Washerwoman
John BUTLAND age 1 born Hampshire

You say in your first post John BUTLIN left the navy/marines in 1848. What dates / events do you have for him?

There is a record on FindMyPast relating to the Ships' Musters records for HMS Southampton from ADM 37/8358 which has: John Butlin age 32 born 1797 Hollowell, Northants. He was a Gunner 2nd Cl. in the RMA. The ship was in Bombay on 02 Apr 1829 and John was discharged on 17 May 1831 as he was Invalided [and I think put onto HMS Success]. He was in the Royal Marines, Portsmouth Artillery Division, 4th Coy.

If you do not have his full papers, you can consult the Description Books at TNA in Kew which will give details on him.

Just realised this post started over 10 years ago [I wondered why it had had so many views!] so this may not now be read by the original poster.
