Hi there,
I would love if someone might be able to look-up the burial details for my Grandma's Grandfather:
Charles George Brooks born c1877 Woodford, Low Leyton, Essex
1911 census in West Ham, North Leyton
Thank you to anyone who can assist
-
Hi
You haven't included details of what year he died
-
Hi
1911 census in West Ham, North Leyton
Presume you mean he did not appear on the 1911 census??
Is this his death reg - if so - he was born a lot earlier than 1877
Charles G Brooks aged 43 - March qtr 1911 West Ham 4A 25
-
Thanks for your reply. I'm very new using this site sorry.
Sorry, I don't know when he died. I can't locate an appropriate record in the death registrations
His birth date comes via the birth registration, and backed up as either 1878 or 1877 in Census records following his birth.
He was alive in the 1911 Census - I thought it might be of use for where he was at the last point I can track him.
He and his wife had at least one more child in 1914, and possibly another in 1920 according to records. Family stories don't include any references or knowledge of the child born in 1920.
Does any of this info help?
-
There are only two burials for Charles George Brooks in the area
1- 26/01/1911 at West Ham
2- 22/01/1916 at Manor Park
What was his wife's maiden name freebmd may have a record of another possible child as after 1911 you get the mothers maiden name printed.

Was your charles brooks married to mary Ann Hawkins? Children: Norman james robert 19/7/1903, percy george 27/3/1908, robert Arthur 16/11/1911, frank edward 25/7/1914? Lived 288 Francis road, leyton? If so he enlisted 1915 and was discharged 17/2/1919. Royal engineers. Ended up as a lance corporal. Says he was a steam train driver?
-
Hi Samantha
If he married Mary Ann Hawkins - the marriage was 10.10.1897 in Bethnal Green. His father is shown as James - deceased
The 1911 index shows him only as Charles - not Charles George
There is a 1912 death in West Ham for a Charles Brooks but he was 45
-
This is a VERY tenuous possibility
June 1950 - Charles G Brooks aged 72 (1877/8) Surrey Northern 5G 322
December 1947 Mary A Brooks aged 70 Surrey North Western 5G 621
-
Hi Carole,
The deaths look possible.
The address in 1911 and the military records tie up.
A shame leyton, woodford and West Ham cover such large areas!

I could have sworn I posted this info earlier re: child born 1920
Birth Dora M A Brooks Sept qtr 1920
Marriage Dora M A Brooks 1942 Devon to Percy N Rose
Death Dora Mary Rose born 17.7.1920 in 1969 in Torbay Devon
Death 1991 Percy Norman Rose b 19.2.1917 Torbay
2 children born to the marriage

Hi there and thank you to both of you
Yes Nannyj that is the guy I'm after thank you.
Carole - yes his wife was Mary Ann Hawkins and the Surrey burials look like they could be possibilities.
I also wondered if his death might just be under Charles Brooks rather than his whole name though there are soooooo many recorded. I went through them again last night (NZ time) and found this one which matches with the birth year but I don't know if Edmonton would be likely...
Brooks Charles 62 Edmonton 3a 1200
I believe this is the death registration for his father - James

Do any of the names in my reply #9 ring any bells?
-
Yes Carol that's the child - Dora - who I think is their daughter... though my Grandma never knew she existed
I had found the same details for marriage and Dora's death though I hadn't found out when Percy died. So thank you!
-
There were 2 children to that marriage - both probably still living. The daughter married in Devon in 1973 so you may want to use one of the online electoral register websites to see if you can trace her
I am sending you a pm with some possible contact info that cannot be posted here
-
No Dora born in leyton around 1920. Will check nearby.
-
Samantha already has all details of Dora - see previous replies. Birth, marriage and death details posted
-
Hi. Yes, saw the replies ... I read them as not being fully sure that Dora was their child? Did I read that wrongly?
-
It's odds on that she was but possibly not as well known to other family members if she moved to Devon
I pm'd some contact details for Dora's daughter and Samantha is going to try and make contact to see if she has any info that is helpful
-
Hi yes I'm sure Dora is part of the family. My Grandma has no recollection of her (Dora would be her Aunt though they are only 3 years apart) so I was cautions in my inclusion of her from birth registration alone - but you both have reassured me that I'm right to include Dora. My Grandma's mother was the eldest and 22 years older than Dora.
Thank you both for help with my search.

I found a birth record for Dora Brooks b.1920 in West Ham (no baptism yet, which would prove the parents. Have checked woodford, leyton, West Ham so far).
Her mother's name was Hawking, as opposed to Hawkins?
Did the previous reply have Hawkins as mother?
I also found a family tree that had Victor Brooks and Edith Hawking as parents. This Dora was born 17th July 1920.
I'll keep looking 😊

Hi Nannyj
This is the birth registration I have
Births Sep 1920
Brooks Dora M A Hawkins W.Ham
has Hawkins as mother.
I also would imagine that the M.A. would be Mary Ann after the mother.
I would be interested to hear if you can find christening or baptism records as I have none for the family. The parents marriage was at Bethnal Green's St James the Great. Father's parents married in the same, while mother's parents married in St Peters, Walthamstow, Essex.
-
Which records do you have? I found charles and his sister's baptism. Also charles on 1861 with his parents james and sarah.
-
Nannyj could well be right about that 1920 birth. Although freebmd shows mothers maiden name as Hawkins - the GRO index shows it as Hawking and there is a 1915 marriage between Victor & Edith in West Ham
No other Brooks/Hawking births in that time frame
EDIT for Nannyj
Samantha has all census info (per pm) - it's just the deaths of Charles & his wife that are a puzzle
-
Thanks Carole :)
-
Ohhhh I never thought to compare to GRO. Ok well that solves that question. hahaha will remove Dora from my tree now - thank you to both of you.
-
I've also submitted the correction to freebmd.

Hi Samantha,
Just seen your post. Charles George Brooks was my Mothers Grandfather. My Mother is still alive, so I have reliable information concerning him and other members of the Brooks family. I am assuming that you are related to Mary Finch (Brooks), if so I think it makes your Grandmother and my Mother 1st cousins! my Mum told me that Mary had no contact with the Brooks family after her marriage. So it would be lovely to Hear from you.My email is jacktack1963yahoo.com Kind regards Jackie.

Thanks Jackie, I've sent you an email.
