I have drawn a complete blank on my grandfather. His name was Stanley Henry RANNS, born 1892 in Ipswich.
In 1918 he married in Hartlepool, where he was working in the shipyards.
After that I can find no records of him.
I have tried St. Catherines Index, emigration records, family knowledge.
He was presumably living in 1920 when my father was born, but I cannot verify that either.
Any advice or help waould be most welcome.
Thanks,
Baz

How about the voters lists for the address where your father was born? Street directories?

Thanks for the advice, but there is no record of him there.
Never mind, I may have to call in Sherlock Holmes. :)

Was your father Clifford Valentine Ranns, born Grantham 1920?
I may have some information for you if you are still on this site?

he married in christ church, west hartlepool, on 9 september 1918. both addresses given as 33 archer street, west hartlepool, on church records. they do not appear at this address in the electoral roll books which are street indexed.

Working as a researcher for http://www.peterboroughww1.co.uk/ Stanley Henry Clifford Ranns signed a Visitors Book at Peterborough East railway station in 1916. Agree he was born Ipswich 1894 to John & Ellen. He was an Iron Foundry worker in 1911 census which would fit with earlier suggestion of a shipyard worker in Hartlepool. We found that he signed up in Colchester on 19.02.1914 joining an unknown Regiment before transferring to the Machine Gun Corps at Grantham 13.05.16. He married Alice Winifred Brown (b27.08.1896 Grantham) 09.09.1918 but why they went to Hartlepool to do this?
He remained in the Army after the war ended, transferring to the Tank Corps 24.01.1922 where he stayed until discharge after 12 years service on 18.02.1926, giving an address near Claypole, Lincs. We cannot find any trace of him after this. Electoral Rolls for 1929 & 30 have his wife Alice living alone in Claypole and by 1939 she is recorded as a widow who was to remarry in 1940 becoming Alice Clayton.
Can anyone come up with a death after 1926?
-
Can't find a death for him anywhere - it's possible that if he abandoned his wife and family that she had to have him declared legally dead (after 7 years) thus enabling her to remarry.

Thanks to all the people who have replied in the past few days, to be honest I had not checked this thread for a long time.
There is some new information for which I am very grateful, and to add a little more. On my Dad's birth certificate which I now have, Stanley is listed as a member of the MGC, but in India. I knew nothing about the tank corps, but my Dad also joined a tank regiment in WWII. (The 15th/19th Hussars).
The address near Claypole is relevant too, his parents in law lived in a house nearby. All I know of it was what the family called it, which was Twisted Chimneys - where my Dad was brought up by his grandparents.

Hi again, I do not know if it is relevant but a Twisted Chimney is in South Road, North Somercotes, Louth, Lincolnshire?

Bazranz, delighted that you have seen this. 12 September will mark the Centenary of when your grandfather made his visitors book entry at Peterborough Station. This event will be marked by the release of his 'story' on social media and on our screen at the current Peterborough Station.
Do you have a photograph of him that we could include? If you could contact me at we could exchange notes to make sure the story about to be release is as correct as possible? Also if you visit the website you will be able to see and read his handwritten entry.

Hi I would suggest using the Private Message system on the forum, as an E mail link could potentially lead to masses of spam being sent?

Please use the PM function to exchange email addresses, anything that your post on RootsChat is fully viewable by anyone Great if it is a fellow researcher but it could also be a spammer looking to collect your email. I have just removed your email from being viewable.
