Post by: lydiafield on Wednesday 21 January 15 22:52 GMT (UK)
I have a marriage that took place in a church in Sunderland with the reference AO26, would anyone know which church this refers to, I know it is RC or non conformist, Lydia

What was the source of the reference number?

I can't help with the registrar's code reference, sorry.

What year did this couple marry? The old newspapers on FindMyPast and the British News Archive site have Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 1873-1953, you may get lucky and find a marriage announcement ?

The name of the church will be on the Marriage Certificate! ;D

Yes, but if you know which church you can often get a copy from the parish register which is not only the original that the couple signed the day they married but also, on average, a copy from microfilm costs abut £1 rather than the £9.25 that a GRO cert costs.

For me, at least, that is a big plus point and well worth some time to try to find out the church if its possible :-) If all else fails then I stretch the budget and get the cert but its rarely my first resort.
