Hi I am looking for info on Private Albert Cox of the Royal Berkshire Reg't
His Regimental Number was 9472 Could anyone tell me when he would have joined the Regiment. Most other members had much longer service numbers so perhaps he joined prior to 1914

On the Medal Rolls Index Cards it says date of entry 6/11/14

A date of entry (into a theatre of war) of 6/11/1914 suggests that he had pre-war service.
6th Nov 1914 is very suggestive of a 2nd Battalion man as this is when the battalion arrived in France. On 4 August the battalion was at Jhansi in India, they were recalled arriving at Liverpool on 22 Oct. A week or so at Hursley Park near Winchester as their Division (the 8th) was brought together and its battalions brought up to full strength by the inclusion of Reserves and then to France and the delights of the 1st Battle of Ypres.
A few lookups later:
The number 9472 suggests that he enlisted in 1911 (have you found him in the census?).
He went to India in 1912 with E Company of the 2nd Berks (China Dragon, 1912 p214).
Died 15 Sep 1915 - listed as missing in the Reading Mercury of 6 Nov 1915.

Thank you all for your interest
Newburychap your reply was exactly what I was looking for. I have not found Albert on the 1911 Census although there are a couple of possibilities.
Albert was commemorated on the Ewshot War Memorial nr Farnham. Although born in Swallowfield his mother and sister moved to the Ewshot area. I am compiling bios for the WW1 names on the memorial.

None of the military records connected with Albert's death that I've found give his age or parents but this might be him in 1891
Living in Spencers Wood, West Swallowfield
Edward Cox Head 51 General Labourer Beech Hill, Berkshire
Elizabeth Cox Wife 38 - Mortimer, Berkshire
Lily C Cox Dau 6 Scholar Swallowfield
W??? E Cox Son 4 Swallowfield
Albert Cox Son 2 Swallowfield
Amy Cox Dau 10months Swallowfield
The best match in 1901 is in Reading and Wokingham District School. He is listed as a pauper scholar age 12 born Spencer's wood. There is also Edward Cox age 14 born Shinfield and James Ernest Cox age 8 born Spencer's Wood in same school.
There is a death of an Edward Cox registered Q3 1894 Wokingham district age 54 which would match with this Albert's father.
And it looks as if Elizabeth his mother is a servant in Maidenhead in the Rogers household
Piece: 1158, Folio: 84 Page: 47
Can't find his sisters Amy and Lily in 1901, but have found both Lily and her mother in 1911.
There are a couple of military records on Ancestry that have an Albert Cox / Albert Edward Cox which give birthplace as Ewshot and residence as where his mother is in 1911, which seem a bit confusing as year of birth is wrong. The Albert who joined Militia in 1904 said he was 18 years 0 months - is that a bit suspicious and he was actually younger?

Hi Lizzie
Thanks for your help. I did have most of that info except the Albert Cox joining the Militia. I have Ancestry but can't seem to find that.
Albert's sister Amy died in 1892
Thanks
