Hello all,
I have 2 baptisms (births) and no father is listed for either!
Ann HURREL - female - 19 October 1834 Selling Kent Mother - Mary Ann HURREL
Ellen Richards - 4 November 1867 Buckland ( Union Workhouse) Dover Mother - Mary Jane
Would sks be able to shed any light on my search?
Thank you very much from Joan in Canada

I can't see a baptism and from the 1851 census it looks as if she could be illegitimate as she is with her uncle, John Hurrell, presumably Mary Anne's brother.

Here is John Hurel's birth, so presumably his parents would be Mary Anne's as well
John Hurrel
Christening 28 Dec 1800
Selling, Kent
Father's Name: James Hurrel
Mother's Name: Martha
-
Parent's marriage:
James Hurrel
Martha Fox

Although there is this christening - perhaps Martha died and James remarried?

Father James Hurrell
Mother Ann Hurrell

To groom,
Thank you so much for all this information!! I will look for another marriage for James - maybe he was a widower and remarried ( as you suggested)....I did find a reference for Ann Hurrel's birth on a FHL film#1835698 P 64 # 508 so I might have to take a trip to my nearest FHL.
Kind regards from Joan

Hi groom,
Was up late last night checking out your information and did indeed find that James Hurrell was married to Martha Fox. She died in 1804 as far as I can see and he remarried one Ann Raines or Rogers - both names are listed for same date. This seems to be the answer to the parents of Mary Ann Hurrell. I am going to get Ann Hurrell's birth certificate but I suspect that she was "base born".
Thank you again from Joan

Hi
I am going to get Ann Hurrell's birth certificate but I suspect that she was "base born".
Ann HURREL - female - 19 October 1834 Selling Kent Mother - Mary Ann HURREL
I'm afraid that as she was born in 1834 there will be no birth certificate as registration didn't start until 1837 in England.

Hi groom,
I really was up too late last night! I will have to search parish registers - there is a FHL film to get.
I was also looking at family trees on Ancestry and many have John Hurrell married to Mary Ann MUNN in 1837 but there were several children born before 1837 so he must have been previously married also. Why genealogists have grey hair!!
Thank you again for your reply....
kind regards from Joan

Turning to Ellen Richards - she was still in the workhouse with her mother and baby brother in 1871
RG10; Piece: 1013; Folio: 15; Page: 13
Jane Richards 24 Dover
Ellen Richards 3 Dover
David Henry Richards 11 mths Dover
David was baptised 11 May 1870 Buckland, near Dover. Again no father given.
In 1881 David was still in the workhouse, listed as pauper, scholar.
Ellen is in Ramsgate, Kent with her uncle, John Richards aged 30, a fisherman, and his family RG11; Piece: 988; Folio: 30; Page: 14. I can't see Jane at the moment.

This looks like Jane Richards and brother John in 1851

Susanna Richards 26 Dover
Jane Richards 4 Dover

Hi groom,
With a bit of luck, I discovered that Jane married Richard Finn, the name directly above hers in the Workhouse records. He had been married 2 or 3 times previously and was 70, I think, at the time of the marriage. My tree on ancestry is Richards family tree and he is recorded there.
Kind regards from Joan
I also purchased Ann Hurrell's marriage certificate and she lists John as her father - probably her uncle? J.
-
That's good, so at least David was with his mother in the workhouse in 1881. What a dreadful life that must have been for them.
-
I can't even imagine how bad it must have been! Richard Finn died a few years after the marriage and as far as I can ascertain, Jane never remarried. She did appear to leave the workhouse and was living with her daughter in later life.
Kind regards from Joan

Just to add a bit more sadness to the thread; it appears that Mary Ann Hurrel died age ten. :'(
There is a burial at Selling as follows:-
1835 Jan 22 Mary Ann Hurrel aged 10.
Tony
Sorry, I think I have got my Mary Ann and Ann muddled up. Ignore the above, it was Mary Ann the daughter of James and Ann who died at age ten!
