Title: Explosion in Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow sometime during WWll
Post by: glendevon on Monday 19 January 15 15:58 GMT (UK)
Am interested in finding information about an explosion in Maryhill Barracks Glasgow, sometime during WWll, which, I believe, killed a number of men. Sorry I cannot be more specific about when or what it was about, but I think it happened during a demonstration of some type of bomb or explosives.

From the Scotsman 29th May 1934 :

GLASGOW BOMB OUTRAGE
--------------------------------
Inquiry Held at Maryhill Barracks

No arrest has yet been made in connection with the mysterious explosion which occurred on Saturday night at Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow. A court of inquiry was into the affair was held at the barracks yesterday.

While the police are very reticent about the incident it is known that a bomb of some kind exploded, and detectives are acting on the theory that the perpetrator of the outrage was the same person who was responsible for the recent bomb explosion at the Army Recruiting Offices, 139 Bath Street, a fortnight ago.

Hi,
Not much info I m afraid but have found two soldiers who died "in an accident at Maryhill Barracks"
on the 27th July 1942
John Douglas Knight and Alexander Tullis Ross. The info comes from remembrance notices.

Try the Scotsman digital archive. There is a report for a grenade explosion in July '42 but you will need to pay to download it.

Thanks Imber, the part on page 17 of the narrative I believe describes the incident I am seeking information about. My father was at the demonstration when the explosion took place and what I can recollect from what my dad said, the soldier in front of my dad was blown back onto my dad which he claimed saved him although the soldier was killed.

I appreciate you letting me know about this paper. Strange that there is so little information about this incident.
