Hello All,
I've traced back my family to Robert Thompson Service, born in Gt Yarmouth in abt 1800-1801. He married Mary Rayner Chapman in March 1823, and lived in Yarmouth until his death in 1878. I'd be very grateful for any information on Robert's birth or baptism - many thanks,
Sally

Hi Sally
Haven't found Roberts Baptism, but found this one for Malcolm in Norwich St Stephen which may be of interest (if you don't already have it).

Thanks, yokel - I had a note of the baptism, but not the actual document, so that's great - I've added it to my tree. Malcolm was Robert's son.
Still hoping to go back a bit further on Robert Thompson Service, though, if anyone knows anything more - thanks.

No baptism so far, but I wonder if this marriage from FreeReg http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl may be of his parents?

Transcribed as Jervice could it be Service?
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ekr/
may be a bit early for your Robert
Edit @20.50: looks like Jervice on the AT's :-\
The only other Service I can find, apart from Jans above, is a John Service who was a witness at the marriage of John Grumett in 1802

Hi Sally
That would explain why the name Service suddenly turned up in Gt Yarmouth, hope you can find more evidence to link David to Robert.
The Caledonian herd-boy can be downloaded from Google Books at http://www.rootschat.com/links/01el5/ in the preface he mentions a wife and family but unfortunately doesn't name them.
there is also this book "The wild harp’s murmurs" at http://www.rootschat.com/links/01el6/

MARY, 31 Jan 1856 age 81**

1851 Census has a Mary SERVICE age 76, born c 1775 Bungay , Suffolk living in Great Yarmouth.
She is a Widow, Laundress in Receipt of Parish Relief.
She is living with Valentine and Hannah BOND as Mother in Law
HO107/1806/772/23
1841 she is under Mary Serniel 1776 born Norfolk, living with the Bonds.
Valentine/Hannah were Witnesses to the Marriage of Mary Ann SERVICE to William CARR,3 Jan 1833 St Nicholas.

Valentine/Hannah name a Son John WARD Bond 1832 St Nicholas

I found a David John SERVICE born c 1805 Great Yarmouth on 1851 Census
(was looking for any Services born Great Yarmouth)
A Tree has an exact Birth for him;
15 Jan 1805 in Earl Soham, Suffolk
Census has him born GY, Norfolk though.
Parents DAVID/MARY nee Ward (David born 15 jun 1766 in Cardross, Dunbartonshire, no Parents named)
David J Married Catherine BOND, Nov 1823, St Clements,Ipswich,Suffolk (this is on Anc but no image)
Catherine was a Sister of Valentine Bond.
They have Siblings of David John as;
Matilda, no extra info
Robert Thompson 1802-1878
Hannah, 1810-1884, married Valentine Bond
Now F/S has a Matilda SERVICE marriage to James BOND, 24 January 1826, Yarmouth, St Nicholas
