I am currently researching Abraham Toovey, sometimes known as Jack or John.
The facts I know about him to date are :
Born c 1831 Wickham, Hampshire, England
20.2.1875 Charged with breach of peace in Thames NZ
Theft charge - dropped
6.4.1875 Toovey was shot at by Thomas H. Edwards in Kauaeranga, Thames
he was only injured. Was working as a bushman.
c 1875 Went to Warkworth and worked as Orchardist/Farmer/Gum digger
I have checked UK Census for 1841 and find that there are two Abraham Tooveys born about the same time, so it is difficult to work out which one is the right one...
UK Census 1841
Parents: Abraham and Lydia Toovey
Child: Abraham Toovey aged 11 years
UK Census 1841
Abraham Toovey aged 12 years working as a servant for John & Rhode Taylor
How can I track Toovey entering NZ etc.... to try and prove which Abraham Toovey is the correct one?
He never married in NZ so the dates/places for his birth have been gleaned from his childrens birth certificates.
Does anyone have any link to John Toovey who was a NZ Forest Ranger / Armed Constabulary during the Waikato wars ?
A John Toovey was interviewed c 1900 about his time as a NZFR, I would like to also confirm whether this Toovey is related to my family or whether I can rule him out definately.
Any help would be appreciated.

When you say he never married in NZ but he has children do you mean he married in England or you can't find a marriage at all?
You have his wife's maiden name from the children's birth certificates? Have you searched on FreeBMD for the marriage. He would have married after 1837 which was the start of registration so his marriage should be on there. Then the marriage certificate would name the father and the father's occupation if Abraham wasn't illegitimate. If no father named then you can discount the Abraham son of Abraham and Lydia.
I notice that some public trees have Abraham and Lydia as his parents but I can't see any proof of that.
I see from the NZ BMD's that his 'wife' is Jemima and they had children Laura 1876 and Abraham 1878. The daughter's name Laura may be an indication that Abraham and Lydia in 1841 are his parents because there is a sister Lora (Laura?)

Abraham Toovey death seems to be registered under Tovey. Found this article about his death in 1880 he was 49 years old

Hi Kelberty,
As per your mention above of possible military service in the Forest Rangers or Armed Constabulary, this man certainly looks like your Abraham. 8)
From Forest Rangers by R. Stowers (1996).p.259
– John TOOVEY
3, No. 2 Company; 23 Dec 1863 – Disbandment, 30 October 1867. Private. Promoted to Corporal 10 Mar 1864. Promoted to Sergeant, 26 Apr 1864. Earlier served 1st Regiment Waikato Militia, No. 100 (joined 11 Sept 1863 at Melbourne, Australia). Later served 5 Division, Armed Constabulary, No 46, Sergeant. Occupation: seaman. Slightly wounded at Te Ngutu o te Manu, 7 Sept 1868. Born 1833, Wickham, Hampshire. Sailed to New Zealand aboard Caduseus (sic) 1863. Received land; town lot No. 95, Harapepe; farm lot Nos. 151 and 152, Pirongia.
I think the man arriving on Result can be discounted.
You might like to have another look for him in Papers Past under this name and spelling.

I'm sure Kelberty will confirm this, but I've found a School Record for a Jemima TOOVEY, (purported) date of birth 29 July 1869, residence Warkworth, admitted to Warkworth School on 9 Sept 1884, discharged 28 Nov 1884, destination 'Service'. Parent/Guardian was Mrs TOOVEY.
I can't find a record of this child's birth on NZ BDM.
This is four years after Abraham (aka John/Jack) TOOVEY's death by drowning.
And diverting back to the Caduceus, from my perusal of the articles she was one of a number of packets working the London-New Zealand run, and operated by Messrs Willis Gann & Co. I suspect that she was given an urgent contract to bring the newly-attested military volunteers across to Auckland.
see Daily Southern Cross, 15 September 1863, Page 1 Advertisements.
And there's this report:
Press, 8 October 1863, Page 2
ARRIVAL OF THE STEAMER STORM BIRD.
We are indebted to the Wellington papers for our Auckland news, and take the following summary from the Advertiser of the 3rd instant.
The ship Caduceus, from Melbourne, arrived at Auckland on the 25th, with 393 military settlers for the Waikato…
26th September.
The Caduceus arrived at 2 p.m. yesterday, with the second draft of volunteers from Melbourne; she brings 387 men and 5 officers, they will be played up to barracks this morning by the R.V. band of this city.

The Wellington Office of Archives New Zealand hold a file relating to Abraham TOVEY'S 1880 inquest.

I can't see a probate listed for either him or my wife Jemima, nor a second marriage for her on NZBDM.

Jemima Jenkins married Thomas Harris Edwards on the 17/1/1864 Paddington London. There is a birth in NZ 1869 for Jemima Edwards also Thomas Harris Edwards B 1874.
There is an article about a Thomas Edwards shooting John Toovey in leg for seducing his wife a while ago 6/4/1875.

I have checked UK Census for 1841 and find that there are two Abraham Tooveys born about the same time, so it is difficult to work out which one is the right one...
UK Census 1841
Parents: Abraham and Lydia Toovey
Child: Abraham Toovey aged 11 years

Just a guess ... but looks possible that the Abraham TOOVEY's aged 11 and 12, are one and the same. [Entered twice on the 1841 census (once by a parent and also by his employer ??) ... both residing at Fareham, Hampshire ??? ]

To Lucy2, I didn't realise that a duplicate entry was possible..... that certainly gives me somthing to think about.
The physical description given for the Merchant navy seaman - describes Abrahams son (and my father) for that matter, so it could be a good lead.
Thank you so much for this info.

To crisane, he definately did not marry Jemima in NZ as I have checked for this... I haven't checked in UK for a marriage for him.
-
A big Thank you to everyone that responded to my post, I have made a request for someone to view the Probate record on my behalf, as that was somthing new to me. I didn't think there was a record for this at all. You have certainly all given me some new leads and information to assist in my search. I appreciate all of your efforts.

Hi Kelbert
Not sure that there was a Probate record ??? Did you perhaps mean the 1880 inquest report in to death of Abraham (John) TOOVEY ??
[I did read somewhere that the estate of Abraham TOOVEY was handed to the Public Trustee ? I'll see if I can locate the item. ]
