Greetings all!
According to my great grand uncle's WW1 Army Medical History papers, his parish of birth was Dowar, Kerry. I have (what I hope) is his parent's 1871 marriage cert and it states that they were married in the RC chapel of Duagh.
I can find Duagh in Kerry but no Dowar. Just wondering are they the same place. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Sharon

RC Parishes in Co Kerry on link. I see Duagh in the north east of the county, but no parish name like Dowar.

I would think Dow-ar is an attempt at Duagh by an American hearing a Kerry accent, but not being 100% on the pronunciation of Duagh I could be wrong.

;D Thanks folks. I had a look through the census for 1901 & 1911 - nothing similar to Dowar either...

Probably the same place, here's another example of the confusion - this time, Duagh / Dewar:

Cheers Gaffy,
Phonetically I've been thinking Du-aah and Do-wah and how they might sound to an upper middle class army officer :P
Thanks everybody for your input!

Hi, yes it's a phonetic pronunciation of Duagh - I'm from a town about 5 miles away and Doo-wah is a close enough approximation of what it sounds like.
I have an ancestor from there who died in WW1 - for a small parish I would not have thought that there were many sons of Duagh who had served in it.
Let me know if you need any help with records from there - the Parish Priest was extremely helpful and generous with access to the records when I was working on that side of my Family Tree.
Regards.

Hi Breen Byrne,
Many thanks for the reply. I have to say this site is fantasic when it comes to folks sharing their knowledge and expertise.
I know I'm preaching to the converted when I say that the Irish B, M & D certs do not contain a wealth of information. How dare they not consider future generations ;)
My great grand uncle from Duagh was William Regan. My grandmother had the "deadman's penny" or memorial plaque in his name. I assumed he died in WW1 - he served in the Royal Munster Fusiliers. Turns out he was overcome by fumes in a lime kiln in Rathkeale and died in 1919 while a still a member of the Labour Corps.
Based on your information, I'm satisfied that the 1871 marriage cert I have for Mary Moloney and William Regan means that they are my great x 2 grandparents (hopefully).
You're lucky to have a helpful PP.
I'm hoping to get down to Limerick later in the year - most of ancestors are from the Loghill/Ballyhahill/Shanagolden neck of the woods - so I may take you up on your kind offer of help in advance.
Many thanks,
Sharon
