Hello,
Have you looked on Free BMD for a marriage? http://www.freebmd.org.uk
That would be the place to start. You could then get their fathers' names from the marriage certificate.

Hi,
This would appear to be the birth record of Mary M Neill -
Mary M Neill
Mother's Maiden Name - Young
q4 1915
Registration district = Newcastle upon Tyne
Vol 10b Page 4
This birth cert would clarify the name of your ggrandmother.

If they are correct then Mabel was born in Elswick Newcastle On Tyne, Northumberland.

thank you so much everyone xxx , my great grandmother did indeed marry Charlie neil and my grand mother was also Mary " mable " their daughter .Charlie neill left the family but \I don't know what happened to him ? .Rumour has it he ran off with chorus girl to London !!!! They also had sons Charlie neill and Lesley neill. I knew Charlie neill married a lady called Eunice and lived near benwell , but leslie was a bit of a vagabond and no-one ever really knew him . occasionally he would turn up at a family funeral.........a complete family mystery !!!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Looks as though Mabel Neill remarried Charles Barfield in 1918, and appears in 1921 with 2 Neill step children.

There is this possible birth entry for Leslie:
Births 2nd Qrtb 1916
Leslie Young
Mother's maiden name Young
Tynemouth
Vol 10b/ Pg
Maybe Leslie was born after Charlie had left the home and family and his birth registered under mother's maiden name?
If he is not showing with his mother in 1921, I wonder where he could be for that census?

Thank you....he is a bit of a mystery ! I have since found tha....mary mables husband charles thomas neill died in ww1 in 1915 .. they only had 2 children at that time ...she remarried charles frank barfield in around 1918 so i wonder if lesley may have been an unexpected arrival in between . I know leslie lived in sallyport terrace newcastle at some point after he returned from a stay in London.
