Title: Death or burial lookup 1880s Leicestershire
Post by: jantoz on Friday 09 January 15 23:10 GMT (UK)
I am looking for a death or burial record for Anthony Joseph Lord, born 1840 Leicester. The last census I have for him is 1871 living with wife Sarah Ann (Ann) Lord nee Moore, children Walter & Arthur & in laws at 79 Oxford Street,Leicester. In the next census Sarah Ann is at the same address with her children & parents, but is listed as a widow. Would appreciate any help in finding his death.

In 1871 they are Joseph and Ann Lord.  He is shown as 28 so birthyear 1843

Have you looked for a death for him on freebmd as Joseph?   He married as Joseph not as Anthony Joseph www.freebmd.org.uk

I can't see anything obvious in Leics and he wasn't a mariner which would rule out a death at sea

The 1881 entry shows a daughter Mary Elizabeth born 1871 and a son George born 1879.

Quite a big gap between the 2.  I wonder if Sarah really was a widow?

Have you looked for Joseph in the 1881?  Again - I can't see anything obvious

Yes Carole, names, dobs & place of births are often different from one census to another and also on certificates. I actually have his birth certificate and he was born 1840 so the 1871 census is incorrect. It is possible Sarah might not have been a widow in the 1881 census as I know this was often put down when a husband decided to leave, however on their son Arthur's marriage certificate in 1896 his father is listed as deceased. It is possible that he was buried under the name of Joseph but I have yet to find a death record that seems to fit.
