Annie Taylor was born in 1836 in Bristol. On the passenger lists for emigration to Australia she is listed as nationality "English & Welsh". She married Joseph Denning in 1861 in Almondsbury, St Mary, Gloucestershire. Her fathers name was Job Taylor/ or Robert Taylor.
She emigrated to Australia with Joseph in 1863. On her obituary in 1923 it said she was a native of the Bristol area. I'm struggling to find out any more about Annie. I'd love a birthdate, and any details of her family. Should I be looking in Somerset (the Dennings were based there) or Gloucestershire? Can't seem to find any info in either. I'm also interested in the "English and Welsh" listing on her emigration records. Any help, advice or info appreciated

Could you just say where you found the information about her birth in Bristol, and the choice of 2 father's names?
With the surname 'Taylor' we need as much info. as possible.
Thank-you
-
Also, was she definitely born in 1836?
In the 1861 census (before her marriage) there is an Annie Taylor in Almondsbury, visitor, born Iron Acton, servant, age 21, with the Sherman family.
There is a family of Dennings on the same page.
-
Her death registration has father as Robert
Annie Denning 1823 Colac. Victoria age 87, parents Robert Taylor and Lucy
-
Immigration record
Annie Denning
Age 25 born c1838
Arrived Melbourne 28 Oct 1863
Departed London via Southampton
In the column Where born? The sub headings are England and Wales (1 column) Scotland, Ireland and Other countries each have a separate column. It says she was born Gloster (spelling as on the form)

There is this baptism on family search.I wonder if she madeup a father's name to appear more respectable because she was illegitimate.
Annie Tayler
1840 at Yate, St Mary, Gloucestershire
Mother - Lucy Tayler
-
She is Gloster, husband and daughter are Somerset. Always look at the image.
-
Duplicate topic. Replied on another one.
-
She is in several public trees on ancestry, but some have her popping backwards and forwards between the 2 countries.
-
This is where the name Job for her father is recorded - familysearch.org
Joseph Denning and Ann Taylor
Married Dec 1861 at St Mary'S, Almondsbury, Gloucester, England
Ann age 22 born 1839 Father Job Taylor
Joseph age 30 Father Ebenezer denning
I wonder if the J is a mistranscription of Rob? But if the baptism is hers then it is looking as if she was illegitimate. I can't see her, or Lucy on the 1841 census as yet. Of course Lucy may have married anytime after An's baptism but there are quite a few Lucy Taylors marrying in the 12 years between 1839 and 1851
-
Deleted because 10 years out for age.
-
Wow, thanks for the fast response.
I found out about her being a native of Bristol in an obituary printed in Camperdown Chronicle Thursday 17 May 1923 on the Trove site. Do you think the possible illegitimacy would explain the english and welsh nationality on her emigration records?
I'm really interested in the names of the Dennings on that census/ and any census with Joseph and Annie living together.
Annie's future husband Joseph is in the 1851 census at Crossways, Somerset, Shepton Mallet
Ebenezer Denning Head Married Male 61 1790 Ag Lab Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Betsy Denning Wife Married Female 51 1800 - Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Joseph Denning Son Unmarried Male 21 1830 Ag Lab Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
John Denning Son Unmarried Male 19 1832 Ag Lab Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Henry Denning Son Unmarried Male 16 1835 Ag Lab Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Abraham Denning Son Unmarried Male 12 1839 Scholar Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Philip Denning Son Unmarried Male 9 1842 Scholar Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Thomas Denning Son - Male 14 1837 Scholar Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Then by the 1861 census I can't find Joseph, or some of the other Denning sons. I just have Josephs mum and dad with one remaining son Phillip
1861 census Upper End, Stoke Lane, Shepton Mallet.
Ebenezer Denning Head Married Male 61 1800 Day Labourer Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Betty Denning Wife Married Female 61 1800 - Stoke Lane, Somerset, England
Philip Denning Son Unmarried Male 19 1842 Road Labourer Stoke Lane, Somerset, England

It does not say English and Welsh on the records.
As crisane explained, there is a column headed 'England and Wales' and if the person was born in either of those countries an entry would be made in that column, and in her case it specified Gloster. There is no query over where she thought she was born, it is recorded as Gloster.

As Annie and Joseph marry in Almondsbury in late 1861, have you looked for either of them there, in 1861 census?
Added:
There is a Joseph there, birth year 1833, a lodger, a possible?

A possibility

Annie Taylor 21 Visitor, servant born Iron Acton
(about 9/10 miles from Bristol and as we do now people tended to give the nearest large town to those who would have no idea where Iron Acton was) She has lowered her age but then again the Shermans may have been answering the enumerator's questions and not know exactly when she was born

crisane,
That Annie Taylor, visitor, was the one i suggested on the first page, which is why I was looking at Almondsbury and iron Acton.
I then found in the 1851 census, a Mary Ann Taylor, born 1836 in Iron Acton, visitor in Iron Acton with an Ann Taylor age 60. unmarried seamstress, possibly 60 or 50, and a Betty Taylor widow, age 73 Chipping Sodbury.
I then thought I had got a breakthrough with an Ann Taylor, age 55,(too old but 1851 census was unclear) living in Iron Acton with a Job Taylor age 60 and a Mary Ann Taylor. But Mary Ann looked to be 12, so deleted.
Perhaps I should have left it for opinions, so have put it again here.
-
This is a possible 1841 census for the 1851 family, so no connection with a Job, Robert or Lucy.

Thanks for your help. I think this one is too young to be him. He would have been 31 in 1861.
The details I have for my Joseph are: Joseph John Denning was christened on 17th January 1830 at St Michael church, Stoke Lane, Somerset. Registration 543.
They travelled to Australia on the ship “Theresa” as assisted immigrants. They arrived in Australia on 28th October in 1863 at Port Melbourne. Joseph was 32, Annie was 25, and they had one daughter, Annie Elizabeth who was 17 months old. Joseph was listed as being a farm sab?
I don't know what a "sab" is. (I don't have access to the census' at the moment as my ancestory subscription has run out)
-
It is farm lab (labourer)
-
It's many years later and thanks to your help in the past I think I am closer to understanding who is who.
Annie Denning nee Taylor who married Joseph Denning was the daughter of Lucy Sherman. This explains why Annie was living with the Sherman family in the 1861 censuses.
Although her father is listed on her baptism as Job Taylor and Lucy did marry Job Taylor I suspect that she is illegitimate as Job Taylor was transported for theft to Australia in 1837 (and Annie was born in 1839 to 1840). His departure left Lucy in tricky financial circumstances and she gave birth to Annie in Thornbury poorhouse. Job however was released in Australia after serving 6 years - remarried, had lots of children and lived to a ripe age in New South Wales. Job's parents were Job and Annie Taylor hence the confusion of names. They had a granddaughter Mary Ann Taylor who was living with them which is not Annie.
If anyone is good at tracing back the Shermansin Almondsbury/Gloucestershire this would be much appreciated. Lucy had a brother William 1807 (who Annie is living with in 1861) and maybe a sister Ann 1827 and I think her parents are Nathaniel Sherman 1768 and Hannah Beyham 1782 but I'm not certain of these as we are back to tricky times before the census
