Am trying to find the divorce between Harold Gregory Bishop and Mary Main around 1916.They were in Barrow in Furness. She left the family and her 3 children while pregnant with another mans child in 1915, that child i believe was called Phyllis bishop born 1916.
It is understood she had one more child with the new man(who was possibly polish).
The question is where to look next as i can not find any more information about after this point?
Thank you for any help

Remarriage
Marriages Jun 1947
Fraigneux Jean B Bishop Camberwell 5c 542
Fraigneux Jean B Main Camberwell 5c 542

If you look under Fraigneux on Freebmd there are two children with mother's maiden name Main.
Douglas J born 1917 and another son born 1920 who could still be alive.
I wonder why they waited so long to marry?

Thank you so much, thats amazing. oh i wonder why they waited 30 years.

As the first marriage was in Lancashire, perhaps you would find more info (not the 2nd marriage obviously) on the Lancs board.
Marriages Dec 1909
BISHOP Harold Gregory Barrow F. 8e 1483
MAIN Mary Duff Barrow F 8e 1483

I wonder if he was Belgium or French and perhaps was already married and couldn't get a divorce for some reason? In which case they would have to have waited until his wife died.

During WW1 there were a lot of Belgian refugees in Barrow-in-Furness, which was in Lancashire at that time as Geoff-E has already indicated, rather than Cumberland. My guess is that M. Fraigneux was Belgian. This seems to be relatively common Belgian (Walloon) surname.
A quick check of the Belgian records shows that there was a Jean Baptiste Fraigneux who married at Liège, Belgium on 13 November 1897 (to a Mlle. Marie Gobert). However, without additional information it is impossible to determine one way or the other if this is the same M. J.B. Fraigneux who has surfaced in the course of your enquiry.
It may be possible to get a list of Belgian refugees living in the Barrow-in-Furness area from the County Archives office at Barrow. if so you might find some additional information about the M. Fraigneux you have come across. If you could get a list of refugees it might also indicate if there was a wife who was also a refugee in the area. The 1947 marriage certificate would, of course, state if the bridegroom was a bachelor, widower or divorced.
Good luck. I hope this helps a little.

Mary Duff FRAIGNEUX died Lambeth 1973 aged 87.
Also a John FRAIGNEUX died Camberwell 1963 aged 80.

Geoff-E's additional information suggests the Jean Baptiste Fraigneux married at Liège in 1897 would not be the one connected to this thread. He would be a little too young to be married in 1897.
The Cumbria County Archives website has some information about Belgian refugees working at the Vickers shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness.

Not all Belgian records have been fully indexed - there is no equivalent of freebmd. How much has been indexed depends on which area you're looking at. Liege (the city itself) is pretty well covered, but my lot from further south generally don't appear on databases. The name seems to be common in that area but not limited to it.
A lot *is* online as image sets rather than name-searchable databases, so if we can find anything that indicates a location we may be able to track his birth, and if he was married previously in Belgium there may be a marginal note on his birth referencing that marriage.
Another possible reason for not marrying until later is that because of the issues around Mary's divorce and the children born before/around the time of the divorce, they were just living together in London and telling people they were already married. By the time the divorce actually went through, they were already living as "Mr and Mrs" and it would have been a bit awkward to head down to church with kids in tow. Years later, they were then told they needed to show a marriage certificate for some official purpose, which resulted in a quick trip to the registrar's office.

Interesting that they are rude about 'migrants' in view of their background.
Nice, old-fashioned bigots.
A very interesting historical snapshot of attitudes of the times that was presumably acceptable in newspapers then, and not considered out-of-place in Australia.

Hi everyone, I have just registered with the website so forgive me if I am not super familiar with it.
I came across this post whilst trying to find information on my Great-Great Grandmother Mary Duff Main/Fraigneux. I am looking for any information as to when and where she died, can anyone help? I see further up in the post Geoff-E states she died Lambeth 1973 aged 87. I was wondering if there is any proof of that available?
I believe she was living in Camberwell in 1936 I have seen electoral register proof for that. But that is the last date i have her on record. Any help would be much appreciated.
For anyone potential relations on this post I am a descendant of Mary and Harold Bishop.
Kind Regards,
