Title: 1600s-1700s Yorkshire Wills
Post by: NNR on Tuesday 06 January 15 14:39 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone is able to access any databases to let me know whether wills are available for any of the following people:

Joseph Micklethwaite of Penistone (died 1693)
Arthur Bray of Hadeing, Holmfirth (died 1781)
Sarah Morton of Penistone (died between 1666 and 1740)
Sarah Haigh of Penistone (died between 1675 and 1740)
Margaret Green of Penistone (died between 1679 and 1742)
John Bray of Greenhill Bank, Holmfirth (died between 1729 and 1777)
Elizabeth Kaye of Copthirst, Cartworth (died between 1718 and 1782)
Joseph Bray of Modwood, Cartworth (died between 1755 and 1784)
Benjamin Bray of Holmfirth (died between 1728 and 1788)
Samuel Bray (of Holmfirth died between 1743 and 1783)
Mary Bray (widow of Samuel of Hade Edge, Holmfirth, died after 1721)

Huge thanks if anyone's able to oblige!

Hi,

I was just wondering if you ever found those wills.  I'm researching the Brays of Holmfirth, including the same people you're looking for, and would love to see what you found if you did.

Thanks!

Hi!

Mostly, those wills just didn't exist. It was very frustrating.

Still, I'm fairly certain there's a firm line back from my Holmfirth Brays to the earliest recorded Brays (James Bray m. Agnes Brigge, 1546(?)). Happy to discuss further by email - I've sent you a PM.

Have you tried searching the pre 1858 Wills on Find My Past (if you subscribe).

Go to Search
Card Catalogue
Use a search term of -- say---- Probate

A list of various places will appear.

Then select the searchable ones relating to Yorkshire.

Often you can link to an ordering service from the Borthwick Institute (for the ones kept in York). There is of course a charge for obtaining a copy. I can't remember now whether it was £7 or £10 -- but I have ordered them in the past -- so prices may have risen.

If memory serves, I actually went through the Borthwick institute. But I'm fairly sure they had none.

TheNineteenth is NNR btw, just to avoid confusion!
