Title: Kabul to Kandahar Veteran - Thomas MacFarlane
Post by: wmather on Monday 05 January 15 22:52 GMT (UK)
I have been given the attached newspaper clip reporting the death on Thomas MacFarlane, a Kabul to Kandahar veteran.  I have tried the Glasgow Herald online archives for March 1932 without success.  Thomas was born 1949 in Hamilton and died on 3rd March 1932 in Glasgow (Calton) and is buried in Janefield Cemetary in Glasgow.

Half of the article is missing and I am trying to trace the original article as there appears to be more information regarding his family.  Is there any other newspapers local to Glasgow that may have carried this article.

Hi wmather

Nothing here re Janefield Cemetery to help further www.memento-mori.co.uk/32.pdf Looks like a stone may not have survived to be recorded.

Have you got his exact death date to help with searching newspapers?

Hi Monica,

The exact date of his death is 3rd March 1932.  His address is given as 152 Duke Street and his death was registered by his son.  The article had intimated that he had passed away the previous week, but there is no death notice in the Glasgow Herald in the whole of March 1932.

William

I have been given the following information re his burial plot.  Glasgow Eastern Necropolis register of lairs D-CEM 1/6/3/4 cert. 11995. Thomas McFARLANE 133, Sydney St. Compartment 2 N° 1482  There are 6 people in this plot, the most recent being in 1992.

William, I have to log off as I am zzzz'ed  :-\

This is an obit rather than a death notice, always harder to find on the Glasgow Herald as they jump about the paper more that the standard BMDs for the period.

Such a fascinating story it seems for Thomas. Would be good for you to find the full obit  :) Just curious, have you got him on earlier censuses, his marriage etc.?

Hi all,

I have checked the Scotsman and Times archives in the NLS, and did not find any record either.

The type and layout look familiar, early "Sunday Post" or "Weekly News".

Hi Monica,

He was in Dennistoun in 1861, Barony 1891, Blythwood in 1901 and married Jane Heggie Calder in Dennistoun in 1884.  His address is given as Annfield Street in 1884.  His wife died in 1929 and is buried in the same plot at Janefield.

Hi All,

There is a tree on Ancestry, by Iain340 which contains this Thomas Wallace MacFarlane, but alas there is no newspaper clipping, but there are 2 photographs, one of Thomas in uniform, and one later in life of him sporting his medals.

John Jamieson 21 boarder
Address: 237 Duke St, Dennistoun

Tom / Monica,
The ancestry tree you refer to Iain340 is my second cousin.  I have full access to that tree and have supplied some of the information there.  The tree owner made me aware of the Kabul connection.  The paper clipping came from one of my first cousins ( grandson of Thomas) who has been unsuccessful in finding it's source.

Hi wmather,

I thought it was a relative when I say all the information.

I am not sure if the newspaper clip is from the Glasgow Herald, I was thinking Sunday Post or Weekly News etc, never seen an archive for them.

In September 1879 he was despatched, along with Maurice Abraham Cohen an expert in the Urdu language, to Kabul to seek retribution for the death of Sir Louis Cavagnari, the British envoy there. He was also given the local rank of lieutenant-general on 11 November 1879. After completing his mission to occupy Kabul, he was appointed commander of the Kabul and Kandahar field force and led his 10,000 troops across 300 miles of rough terrain in Afghanistan to relieve Kandahar and defeat Ayub Khan at the Battle of Kandahar on 1 September 1880.

The following obit of a fellow Kabul to Kandahar veteren may help identify Thomas's medals as seen in his Ancestry tree photos.
"KABUL-TO-KANDAHAR VETERAN DIES
Mr. Thomas Hanley, who died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. E. Coombe, of Rundle street, Kent Town, yesterday, aged 81, was a member of Lord Roberts's bodyguard on the famous march from Kabul to Kandahar during the Afghan war.
Mr. Hanley joined the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders as a young man. In 1874 he went to India, and in 1876 transferred to the Gordon Highlanders. With that regiment he went through the Afghan war of 1878-79. Later, his regiment was engaged in the first Boer war.
He received the Imperial Service Medal. Among other awards he gained were the Afghan Medal with three clasps, as well as the Bronze Star for the march to the Queen's Medal for the second Boer war with four clasps; and the King's Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct."
