Hello!
I have come to a frustrating stop! Please could anyone help me with information on a James Baseley born 1834 and died 1904 in Essex. I know he married Mary Ann Banks in 1872 but would appreciate any help for siblings etc. from the marriage certificate I have found his father is William Baseley but no more information for this relation either. Any info or advice on where to go next would be much appreciated.
Many thanks and happy new year

Can I ask do you know where James married Mary Ann Banks and was it his first marriage?
Have you found James on any of the Censuses ?

Hi Sophie ,
From the quick look I've had I reckon this could have been James's second marriage (Mary Ann Banks).
Have you used www.familysearch.org.uk - it's a free site and can help you on your way. Think you could find more about James on it.
For instance https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X3PP-HJF
This link will lead you to James on the 1881 Census with Mary Ann and children. It gives his place of birth as Daventry, Northhamptonshire.
There are other transcribed records relating to James on this site.
Good luck with your research and don't worry people on this site are always pleased to help if you get stuck!!

Oooops - think that the quick look I had I got confused with the other James Baseley who was born in same area around 1834 too. He seems to be settled in Warwickshire and is pretty consistent through the Censuses. That's how I thought James had a first wife....but I'm now back to Mary Ann being his one and only!
Your James Baseley is in Norton, Northhamptonshire for 1841 and 1851 Census. Can't see anything for him again until he pops up again in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex on 1881 Census . So where is he in 1861 and 71?? ???
This Census entry relates, I believe, to James's mother Ann in 1841 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7Q7-9VP
And this is father William https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7Q7-9VG
It looks like there could be 2 older sisters too. Mary born approx.1829 and Ann born approx. 1831.
I can't see a marriage on Familysearch for William and Ann but tried looking on www.freereg.org.uk and think there may be a marriage record transcribed on it in 1830. Have a wee look! I'm not sure it is the couple but it would be a starting point to investigate. There is also a burial in Long Buckby (where James is living in 1841 Census) - Ann Baseley 18 SEP 1873 which again could be of interest.
I have to confess here that I don't really know that much about searching the English records. I'm Scottish and my experience is with Scottish records (which are slightly different ;) ). I just came upon your first post when browsing the site and thought I could maybe give a hand. Perhaps to get more local knowledge and experience you could message the Moderator for the Common Room board and ask if they could move your thread to Northamptonshire board. There are bound to be folk who peruse it who could help you better than me.
Good luck Sophie,
Looby :) (Linda)

Looby & Sophie, following the lead of a possible marriage in 1830 I have found a William Baseley on ancestry.co.uk dob 1791 from 1861 Census and from freereg.org.uk a marriage of William Baseley to Ann Rollerstone on 28 Dec 1830.My wifes Great Great grandad James Baseley was born in 1834 so this might be his parents?.Maybe you've unblocked the road for me.....many thanks.

Hello strider
Sorry it's been so long, time gets away and now I find myself with more time to research again. There is a 1834 James Baseley on our family tree, he married Mary Ann banks if this links to your family. I have completed the tree down from there so if there is any info you can give further to confirm if it's your wife's line then let me know!
