Title: Borders of County Sligo.
Post by: Michael Dixon on Sunday 03 July 05 17:19 BST (UK)
Are today's  borders of County Sligo the same as they were in early 1800s ?

I am interested in the eastern border, with Co Leitrim, and wonder if any part of today's Co Leitrim was once within Co Sligo .

Hi Michael

I am not aware that the border has changed in that time.  Why do you ask?

Best wishes

Ticker,

Because I have exhausted avenues of finding my Gallaghers root-place in Co Sligo. ( many of them in England and Canada stated in records that they were from Co Sligo)

One branch in Canada became connected via marraige ect, with McPadden family, from part of Co Leitrim, near Co Sligo's eastern boundary.

So I was considering switching Gallagher  search to Co Leitrim. But only considering !

Hello Michael,

Regarding Sligo/Mayo borders!!

I have been searching for paper work of mine to help you with your quest! but have just found on line that the Borders did change but no time frame was given..if you have since found out can you let me know, as it would help me also with my KILGALLON family from both Sligo and Mayo.

Here is what I have found..on  www.answers.com/topic/ballina-county-mayo

OLD BORDERS..Ballina is on the Mayo side of the Mayo-Sligo county border, part of what is now the town was once was part of County Sligo, with the border for the most part once being the River Moy, south of which was in Sligo, including Ardnaree and Crockets Town [ the Quay ]

also take a look at
www.iol.ie/~fagann/1798/dfender3.htm
I haven't read the second fully..it just may be related to our query!

All the best

Yonks Ago,

Thanks mucho for your interest..... although I am interested in both counties Mayo and Sligo ( ggm Mary O'Melia/Maley from Westport, married my ggf John Gallagher from somewhere within Slgo, at St Wilfred's Church in Blyth, Northumberland in 1864) my issue is about the eastern border of Co Sligo, where it touches County Leitrim.

In 1862 in Ontario, Canada, John Gallagher's sister, Ellen, married a Leitrim-born John McPaden. The big question was did they meet "over there" or did they know each other before they left Ireland. If they did know each other in Ireland, it would help focus my seacrh for the Gallagher's root parish in Co Sligo.

Michael, Your Gallagher's if he married Mary in 1864 John's date of birth would be poss: in the 1840's.
Do you know John Gallagher's mother's maiden name.
and do you know any of his brother's and sister's names.
If you do it may help me to help you.

Lep,

Joihn Gallagher's parents were Martin and Mary Gallagher nee Donohoe/Donaghue.

Their children were ...
Patrick, b.Sligo c1838, married Lowell, Ma, USA 1873
Ellen, b.Sligo c1840, married Ontario, Canada 1862
John b Sligo c1842, married Blyth, Northumberland 1864
James bSligo c1846, married Sunderland, Co Durham 1870
Michael b.Ire. c1848,m. Bishop Auckland, Co Durham 1869
William b.Ireland c1850, m. Silksworth, Co Durham, 1876
Edward b. Newcastle, Northumberland 1852,m Silksworth 1876.
Jane b Newcastle 1857. died in infancy.

Mary b.c1820 Ire, died Ryhope, Co Durham 1874
Martin b.Ire, c1812, died Silksworth 1884.

Martin was married/alone on Blyth, Northumberland, 1851 Census.

Mary and family, without Martin are in Newcastle on C1861.

Patrick and his wife, Mary,(nee Moran) and Ellen and her husband, John McPaden, and the rest of them ( minus the deceased  Mary and Jane) are all on English census 1881( All in County Durham, except John and his wife Mary O'Melia, who stayed in Northumberland)

So, in summary, I have all their "footprints" in USA, Canada and England, but not a sign of then in Ireland/Sligo. (in spite of many visits and efforts of Irish pofessionals.

Hi Michael, Have been through all the Gallagher's from the 1830's but none of your Gallagher's are there.
              Sorry Lep.

Thanks Lep for your efforts..... I think the whole family must have upped roots and done a flit..... from a parish whose records no longer exist for their era !

Dear Micheal

I am also a Dixon from Northumberland we have comunicated before.   Regarding the Gallaghers from Ireland-  My wife also has Gallaghers in the family from  Ireland.  But they turn up at Nth Sunderland when Robert Gallaugher  bn 1845 married Margaret Rutherford.   They had as far as I know 2 children Margaret Gallagher and Jane Gallagher bn Nth Sunderland,  Seahouses.  I think they were connected with the fishing industry.

Not sure if the actual border changed but people did move about and marry ones from other parishes and counties.
Certainly from 1870s onwards my family lived on the edge of one county and their postal address was the nearest town in the adjoing county. At the moment a friend living in Co. Leitrim has a Co. Sligo postal address.

What about Martin Gallagher at Carrowdarny in the parish of Shancough in the Tithe Applotment Books, 13 March 1835, also a Miles Parlan there.

HI everyone.  My ancestor was Bridget Kilgallon and she was from Mayo/Sligo.  I am currently researching her and very eager to find other 'family' members.  Bridget moved over to the West Midlands in the 1800s and married a John Banks.  Anyone related please contact me. My email address is (*)
