I am researching Westlake's from Northlew, Devon and one particular branch may have emigrated to Canada between 1840-1860.
Family 1
Anne Westlake daughter of Geroge Westlake and Sarah Cross was baptised 1807, Northlew
Anne married Andrew Dillon 1830, Northlew
They had the following Children who were all baptised in Northlew.
Eliza Dillon b. 1831
Elizabeth Dillon b. 1833
Anne Westlake Dillon b. 1835
Matilda Dillon b. 1837
Mary Dillon b. 1840
Louisa Dillon b. 1842
Bartholomew Dillon b. 1844
I believe this family emigrated to Ontario but changed their name to Dilling and Louisa was known as Laura.
George Westlake b. 1801, Northlew (George was the older brother of Anne Dillon).
Married Mary Kerslake in Sourton, Devon
George and Mary had the following children
Elizabeth b. 1834, Sourton, Devon
Ann b. 1836, Sourton, Devon
Mary b. 1838, Sourton, Devon
William b. 1841, Northlew, Devon.
In the 1841 census both families where living next to each other at Eastcott, Northlew. The Dillon family are recorded as Dilling.
I have been unable to find any record of George & Mary's family after the 1841 Census and do not know if they emigrated to Canada around the same time as Andrew & Anne.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Vicki

Wow Sandra that is a lot of information to digest. I live in Australia so it has been difficult researching Canada and USA records.

Hello,
I'm not sure if or how I can help but I live at Lower Eastcott, Northlew & found your post by searching online for our address. I have looked at the 1841 census, as did you. There are 2 houses here now on opposite sides of the road: Lower & Higher Eastcott. In some censuses these were listed as West & East but in most as just 'EASTCOTT'. Over at Higher Eastcott they have another building with a chimney, so this may have housed the 3 families as in 1841 (and also 1851).
Its fascinating that in the 1840's people left West Devon for Ontario. But now as then, it is hard to earn a living here. We run a vineyard & winery, which we established from scratch. In total we have just 12 acres, so very much a 'small holding' rather than the farm as of days gone by. But we understand the farmhouse to be 16th century, so more history here than we'll ever know as little documentation survives.
Best wishes,
Hilary
