HiI have this photo that was my great grandads , It is a really small photo and I know nothing about it it has written in pencil George Conolly at the back but I have no idea who they are or when it was taken? Could this be possibly be dated as to when it was taken please

This might do better on the Armed Forces board as they are better at uniforms. I'll post a request over there.
In the meantime I might suggest that the black cardstock was popular in the 1890s.
Could we see the back please.
Cheers,
China

If you have the original the answer (for the one on the left at least) will be found on his shoulder title.
You should rescan at the highest resolution your scanner can do. If the file size is over 500 Kb you will need to cut and paste just the shoulder badge before re-posting.

I notice the chap at the back is from a different Regt.
The only one I know that has buttons in series of 2 is the Coldstream Guards.
Ken might able to enlighten us on that.

This is odd.
The back is half of a postcard.
However it would date it after 1902.

My first thought was these are bandsmen's uniforms, rather than military.
Hibee

Possibly Militia rather than bandsmen.

The original photo is really small my grand aunt now sadly deceased owned it said it was her fathers nothing more is known but Ive made recent discoveries of family in the military ww1 and was hoping I might be able to link this picture somehow
It is a shame that now more info was not written on the back
