Title: John and Ann Newberry (or Newbery) Ashby De La Zouch and Church Langton
Post by: ericthepenguin1 on Sunday 21 December 14 11:44 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am having trouble in tracing a marriage and birth details for John and Ann Newberry (Newbery).

From the Census of 1851 John is a Tailor, born around 1811 in Ashby De La zouch. Ann is a Glove Maker born around 1819 in Church Langton. Their 4 children are born in 3 different places Ashby, Church Langton and St Margarets and they age from 4 to 13.

I would be grateful if anyone could have a shufty at this and help me out.

Many thanks, (and happy Christmas!!)

Regards

Eric

Have you found them in 1841 - just in case it is a second marriage for his wife?

There is a discussion about this on - http://www.british-genealogy.com/archive/index.php/t-43831.html

Also a tree on Ancestry which has the marriage as that to Ann Ison and parents of John as Francis Newberry and Hannah Mason. Also his birth (baptism?) in Ashby as 29th April 1810.

P.S. A copy from the marriage register in 1831 is available on Ancestry

Cheers guys for the help. I include below what i posted on the Leicestershire FHS site. Yes, it appears that Ann Ison may well have been the  lady married to John Newberry in 1831.

'Can anyone help with this one. I am researching a John Newbery (DOB 1810), from Ashby De La Zouch. He was married and his wife was called Ann, (Born in Church Langton.). The 1841 Ashby de la Zouch census gives a birth date for his wife Ann as 1806. There is a marriage of a John Newbery to an Ann Ison in Birmingham 1831, I am unsure if this is the right marriage but cannot find a better fit. The marriage entry for John Newbery and Ann Ison shows marriage by Banns and no indication that she was under age, so I assume that the 1841 census gives her correct age.

In later census's his wife, Anns', age is given between 1817-1819. I have found her death registration in 1893 which gives an age of 75 and a birth date of 1818. This agrees with the 1851 and later census.

Is it  possible that John had two wives, both named Ann? The first could be Ann Ison born 1806, married 1831 and possibly died/disappeared before 1841 census where Ann suddenly become about 12 years younger for the remainder of her life. It is also possible that she decided to tell phibs about her age?

I think the way to prove this would be to obtain two of their childrens birth certificates, one for Sarah b. 1837 and the other for say Amelia b. 1842. This should give the mothers maiden names and prove the suggestion or otherwise. I haven't as yet located a suitable death reg for Ann circa 1841 or a new marriage for John, but then registrations did not always take place in the early years. I haven't  located a birth reg or baptism for Thomas Circa 1841 which may be an indication of family turmoil. The trouble is that even if you had Sarah's and Ameilai's birth certificates my Great x 2 Grandfather is Thomas, and without any birth information I fear, for his mother's line at least,  the search ends here'

As i said above,if we agree there was a 2nd wife called Ann but there is no GRO i fear I have had it!!

Any comments?

Thanks

Eric

Amelia's baptism is 15 May 1842 at Ashby, no marriages in Leicestershire for a John Newber(r)y that I can find pre 1837 but there are 2 in Leicester 1837-1870

1843 Register office and there is an Ann Taylor among the grouping
1846   Q2 15/144   18-Jun   St Nicholas
NEWBERRY   John   Leicester
SWINGLER   Ann

There is a burial for an Ann Newberry at Ashby age 38 1844 and Sarah's baptism is 17 Sep 1837

Deaths Dec 1844
NEWBERY    Ann        Ashby de la Z    15/2

Births Sep 1837
NEWBERY    Sarah        Ashby de la Zouch    15/3

Just checking the papers

There's a report

Leicester Chronicle 20 August 1853

Of Ann Newberry badly treating her step daughter Amelia,

Leicester Journal 26 August 1853

a further report, gives more details

There is a baptism for Ann Swingler in East and West, Church-Langton in 1817, which fits with the 1851 census, so the 1846 marriage looks like the right one and ties in with the newspaper report.

Given that Thomas Newberry is not on the 1841 census, he may not be John's son.

He is probably Thomas Swingler who is in Chuch Langton, five months old, living with Ann's parents, William and Francis Swingler. After Ann married he probably used his step-father's surname, which is often the case.

This would account for his birth place on the 1851 census, which doesn't tie in with the births of Amelia and Sarah.

Assuming that Thomas Newberry was the, presumably illegitimate, son of Ann Swingler, her parents would seem to be William Swingler and Frances/Francis Allen who married in Knighton in 1798. They had several children in Oadby - Thomas 1799, Benjamin 1802, William 1804, Benjamin 1806, James 1809, Lavenor 1812 and Joseph 1815, before the last three in Church Langton - Anne in 1817, John in 1819 and George in 1821.

In 1851, William was in East Langton, which he gave his birth place, with Frances as Great Glen. Three sons were also in East Langton - Jospeh and James, b Oadby, who is next door to George, b East Langton.

As regards Ann, and her son Thomas Swingler, I have had a look at the 1841 census and wondered where Thomas's mother, Ann Swingler was in 1841. Can anyone have a shufty for me, (I cannot see anything via Ancestry.com). I have sent for the Birth certificate for Thomas in the hope it may have the fathers name.

I have also looked at Ann parents. I see there is a burials in Church Langton for a William Swingler (1854) and a Frances Swingler (1858), but after the 1841 census i cannot find a 1851 Census for them...another shufty please?

Once again many thanks

Eric

I can't see her either, this isn't her just to eliminate the early marriage whilst you are looking, they are together with her parents 1841

I can't be certain but she could be Ann Swindler, who is a servant living on London Road, Oadby, which is only 9 miles away. The image is much clearer in Findmypast than Ancestry. Also, Findmypast gives Swingler as a name variant.

Cheers Guys.

Willsy pointed out an entry In the National Newspaper archive for Ann Newbery (see post 4/1/15).

I also found an entry for Ann Swingler (Wife No. 2), mother, Frances Swingler. She appears in court, in 1841, and per a  Leicestershire paper reporting the case,  it is for assaulting an Elizabeth Shaw who had a child by her husband....nice to find a bit of colour to add  to the family tree!!  :)

Eric.

Hi Eric et al....
I am very confused .. i have John and Ann (Ison ) born 1816 Church Langton on my tree... they were married in 1831 and had 11 children.. i have found the marriage entry .. staing that he is a batchelor and she a spinster.. ( although this would of meant she married around 15/16yrs old )
I have found Ann in 1881 living with some of her younger children.. age 62, meaning that she was born around the time i have for her... albeit a couple of years
i am so confused now  :o
